I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis when I was 25. I am now 36. My arthritis began fairly innocuously with one swollen knuckle and before knew it I was taking all kinds of medicine, some of which seemed to be more potentially worrisome than the arthritis itself. For seven years, I dealt with the disease without knowing a sole my age who battled it.
Four years ago, I walked into a support group for young adults with arthritis that was hosted by the Arthritis Foundation. Meeting others my age with similar concerns, plus regular attendance at the meetings enhanced my quality of life immensely. More than I can express in this space.
Today, my method of coping includes a of dash of stubbornness, a pinch of prescription drugs, a hefty helping of activities that simply make me happy and fulfilled, plus two big scoops of supportive friends and family. This recipe works well for me, and allows me to consider myself an "arthritis warrior," not a "victim" or a "sufferer," or even a "patient."
I have learned to be an advocate for myself and my well-being. I seek out information about health and wellness on a regular basis, which gives me a sense power over my rheumatoid arthritis. It is important to me to pass on the knowledge that I've gained over the years to others who are fighting similar diseases. I accomplish this through volunteering for Arthritis Foundation events, participating in the Young Adult Network, serving as a camp counselor at Camp Esperanza, and running a blog I started last year called ArthritisFriend.com.
I think I am a stronger person for having the disease, and this fortitude helps me keep moving forward.
