As a narrative filmmaker type, I enjoy photography as a hobby which keeps me sharp. I'm more or less serious about it, depending on when you catch me.
I enjoy: analog, preproduction over post, strong concepts, good raw materials, building things, planning things, shooting things, getting things in one shot, and not sitting in front of a computer.
My favorite camera for the past 10 years has been my Minolta x-700, but I've been playing around with medium format during that time using toy cameras like Holga and Diana. Last year picked up a Yashica 124 Mat G, which is my main camera these days. I'd like to learn larger formats. My digital's a Nikon D90, which was purchased mainly for video. Sometimes I'll put them on Vimeo.
My key pursuit is and has been filmmaking (narrative storytelling); it's what I went to school for, and it's what I enjoy most. I like: goofy and earnest tonality (genuine but not taking itself too seriously), long takes of wide shots with three or more actors in a frame, the suspense element within every genre, and characters just hanging out in their own space. I despise: too much coverage, preachy dramas with no sense of humor, films that exploit the fragile senses of the audience in order to make some lame artistic point, and nudity.
I have a rad husband and daughter. They are both good at things. James is a designer and Olive...well, she's mainly just good at being super cute for now.
