The Tongass is the largest of the 155 national forests in the nation, covering some 17 million acres and spanning 500 miles from north to south. It is divided among 10 Ranger districts: Yakutat; Hoonah; Admiralty national monument; Juneau; Sitka; Petersburg; Wrangell; Thorne Bay; Craig; and Ketchikan-Misty Fiords ranger districts.
As the largest intact temperal rainforest in the world, the Tongass garners substantial attention and interest from around the world. we host millions of visitors each year who travel to some of the 32 forest communities and residents who live directly tied to the natural resources here. every decision that the Tongass leadership and the Forest Service makes here directly touches the lives of tens of thousands of residents, and millions of visitors. It is important to note that everything that mankind has ever found living here, still lives here. There are no endangered species of animals on the Tongass. The meticulous planning and implementation of natural resource, recreation and partner projects is done with an enormous amount of public involvement to ensure it remains that way.
