I was given my first camera, a Kodak Instamatic, when I was 12. At 18 I went off to Design School where I studied Industrial Design and one of the joys of being there was spending time in the studios and darkrooms and exploring the world of photography.

Since graduating however my photography had mainly been about the intermittent documentation of my world; special occasions, travelling, architecture and design, sailing and woodenboat-making, family and friends. In the last few years I’ve got back into playing at serious photography, concentrating on the changing face of where I live – Port Adelaide. My photography is now partly about being witness to the unnecessary removal of the Port’s rich maritime heritage, culture and character but also partly the recording of things that others might see no value in, finding beauty in the ordinary.

In the process I’ve also rediscovered the simple joy of observing and photographing things for the fun of it, seeing things from a different perspective, composing images and playing with light and shade. And I’m really enjoying once again putting film through my old cameras and the pleasure of processing my own film. And sharing what I see.

So for that I have to thank Flickr.

Through Flickr I’m discovering that there are a lot of people out there who are similarly passionate about their part of the world, seeing it their way and sharing it with me. What a privilege it is to be part of it.
