About Ryerson & Burnham Libraries
The Ryerson & Burnham Libraries constitute a major art and architecture research collection serving The Art Institute of Chicago and scholars in the fields of art and architectural history. All periods and media are covered, but special emphasis is placed on architecture of the 18th through 20th centuries and 19th century painting, prints, drawings, and decorative arts. Special collections include the Percier and Fontaine Collection of 17th-19th century architectural books, the Mary Reynolds Collection on Dada and Surrealism, the George R. Collins Archive of Catalan Art and Architecture, and the Mrs. James Ward Thorne Collection of illustrated books.

Why is the library adding photos to Flickr?
We are adding photos to Flickr to increase public access to, and knowledge of, our collections. Additionally, inviting user input allows us to harness the collective knowledge of our patrons to increase our understanding of the collections.

Will these photos still be available through the library’s website?
Yes, these images along with thousands more will remain accessible through the Digital Collections section of our website

How did you choose the photos that have been uploaded?
We chose photos that reflect the strengths of our collections or that contribute to Chicago’s unique art and architectural history. In keeping with our wish to upload only photos with no known copyright restrictions, we’ve selected images that are pre-1923, and therefore likely in the public domain, under United States copyright law.

Where can I get more information on these photos, or on the library’s collections in general?
Questions about the featured Flickr photos can be directed to Ryerson & Burnham Archives at rbarchives@artic.edu. General questions about the Libraries or reference inquiries about the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries Book and Serials Collection can be directed to the reference desk at reference@artic.edu.

Can I view these photos in person?
Archival collections are generally available for viewing during the library’s public hours (Wednesday & Friday 1-4 pm and Thursday from 10:30 am – 8 pm). Most items are available for viewing, however select collections may be located at an offsite facility or restricted for preservation purposes. Please contact Ryerson & Burnham Archives at rbarchives@artic.edu if you have questions about the availability of collection items before your visit.

Do I need a Flickr account to access the library’s photos on Flickr?
No, the photos are publicly accessible. To leave tags or comments, though, a Flickr account is necessary. A basic account is free.

How can I help if I have more information on a picture or I notice an error in data associated with a picture?
If you have a Flickr account, please add this information as a comment. Library staff regularly reviews user comments. If you do not have a Flickr account, please contact us at rbarchives@artic.edu. If possible, please cite a published source for the information for our reference, including author, title, page number, or URL to allow us to more easily verify the information.

Will my comments or tags be edited?
It is our policy to allow all comments and tags, though they may be checked for factual accuracy. We do not edit comment or tag content, however, inaccurate, vulgar, threatening or harassing, abusive, or offensive comments and tags may be removed.

Will you be adding more images in the future?
Yes, expect to expand our Flickr set to represent other Ryerson & Burnham Libraries’ collections.

How long will these photos remain on Flickr?
We have no plans to remove these photos from Flickr. In the case that we discontinue this project, we will endeavor to provide advance notice.
