About
IndyCog started as a nagging idea late one night in early February 2009. Christopher had been writing freelance bike articles for NUVO for a few months. Somewhere between brainstorming for his next article and sleep, the desire of more creative and logistic freedom in his endeavor to bring Indy bike-culture into the limelight started as an itch in his foot, became a legful of itchy hair (good thing he wasn’t a roadie and had them shaved — perhaps the idea would have stopped right there), and finally took shape in full-blown restless legs syndrome until he got out of bed and put all the possibilities down on paper. He took that paper to Benjamin, who said, "Boosh, dude. Let's make this happen." Benjamin pretty much made it happen from there.
The idea: to create a public forum for all things bikes, specifically things that showcase the Indy bicycle culture’s creativity and artistic knack — to provide updates and insight as to what is happening in the bike world in Indy and the surrounding areas, as well as a place for other cyclists to submit their work (whether writing, advocacy news, photography, sculpture, etc.) for public scrutiny or praise.
So, here it is. IndyCog. Though we will do our best to represent all spectrums of cycling (roadie, mountain, bmx, fixie, velo, commuting, so on), we’ll admit straight-away that we and our friends tend to be to the cycling world what hooligans are to the soccer world — single-speed riding, jeans wearing, CritMass gathering, alley-cat racing cheeky monkeys — and we don’t often apologize for it.
That bias will no doubt show through in content, but diversity in motives and attitudes is one of the beautiful things about taking part in the sport/culture/hobby of cycling. That diversity is sometimes as divisive as it is unifying, but it no doubt continues to bring fresh energy and perspective to the numbers of people cranking away every day. We hope that this blog can be a place where people can put aside whether they ride a Madone, a Pista, or commuter-pannier laden hybrid, and simply say to each other:
To those about to crank, we salute you.
