Originally from Bromley in south east London, I studied zoology at Aberdeen University, Scotland and at the Mammal Research Institute, Pretoria University in South Africa. I now live in Edinburgh and have been working for Scottish Natural Heritage, the government nature conservation organisation, since 1994.

I manage to get out hillwalking or cycling in Scotland and northern England a few times a year and travel to more exotic climes whenever I can.

I bought my first digital camera, an excellent Nikon D50 (with a great Tamron 18-200mm lense), in December 2005 and am now a complete Flickr addict! In October 2009 I upgraded to a Nikon D300 - still using the Tamron 28-200mm but with the addition of a heavyweight Sigma 120-400mm OS lense.

Although the Nikon D300 is a fantastic camera I find it rather heavy and bulky to carry around, especially if using the big Sigma lense. In October 2011 I therefore bought an entirely new camera system - a Panasonic DMC G3 with 14-42mm kit lense, a 14-140mm, a 100-300mm and a 45mm macro (x2 for 35mm equivalents) - so far I'm very pleased with it. The electronic viewfinder is good, the flip out, rotating back screen is extremely useful, the layout is just like an SLR and it's easy to use ... and it is lighter and more compact than any SLR. Low light performance is excellent and so far the results are very pleasing. The only downside is battery life - only about 200 shots.

I also use a few compacts - an great wee Canon Ixus 860 IS and an excellent Fujifilm F80 EXR (both with a waterproof housing for diving), and a not particularly good, but usefully waterproof, Pentax W20.
