I've been an outdoorsman and enthusiastic amateur landscape photographer for many years--also with a professional twist, as I'm a geologist by training. I live in the US Mountain West and so my pictures focus on that area. I grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada, where my dad was involved with the nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site. I spent much of the 70s in school, much of the 80s in Washington state, and have been back in Nevada for over 20 years. But I'm now in the northern part of the state, a long way from Vegas!

I currently am using a Canon Eos Digital Rebel, but I have lots of 35mm slides and film, taken with various cameras, from the years before 2005. I scan those slides with a Nikon Coolscan V ED. Nearly always I have ICE (dust/scratch elimination) and GEM (remove film graininess) enabled; that's why some pix have "_ig" at the end of their name.

I also use Flickr for cloud storage and backup, so my sets--especially those collected for family and friends--are not guaranteed to be of interest to anyone else! Pix I think others might find interesting I post to groups. Some also are in "theme" sets (e.g., geology).

And speaking of groups: I've participated in lots of them in the last couple of years on Flickr, and as a result I've gotten pickier with my participation. First, I am no longer participating in groups that require commenting on other pictures when posting. Comments should be freely given, not the result of bribes! Second, I'm phasing out of groups that require pre-approval by a moderator. I'm all for moderators deleting pictures that are wildly off-topic--there are certainly groups out there that could use some serious housecleaning!--but pre-approval is a uselessly intrusive approach. Not only is it inconvenient for all concerned, but it bespeaks a lack of trust in the community. Most people will not wantonly post off-topic pix; more often there are honest differences of opinion as to what's relevant. And that diversity is part of what makes a group interesting, rather than just a projection of the moderator's (or moderators') esthetic prejudices. Finally, it's always easy to delete after the fact that egregiously off-topic pic that did manage to slip through.
