I have enjoyed photography as a hobby since my late childhood when I would sneak the family's box camera and get in trouble for wasting film (rightly so - and I still do from time to time - the waste film, or pixels, part!). As I plan to retire in a few years, I hope to be able to develop my skills and portfolio so as to be able to supplement my income from my hobby. I shoot mainly digital but have a Nikon F80 and a Bronica GS-1 medium format. I shoot a Nikon D3, D2X, and a Canon Powershot Pro1. I thank my good friend Soaring Gull for introducing me to Flickr. Constructive critique of any of my photos, at any time, will be gratefully accepted, and I will do the same for others as my skill level, experience, and time permit.
I am a student of the pathways of life – in possibilities, change and connections. Before taking up photography seriously, I had worked for over 30 years as a counseling psychologist. People frequently asked me how I could spend so many years “listening to people’s problems”. The truth is that I was rarely listening to people’s problems; but rather to their possibilities, to what lie beneath their words, to what went beyond their words, to their essence, to where I could possibly help them move to. I could not have done this had I not gone through some transformational changes in my own life. I look for the same through my lens. Occasionally I find it. It might the beauty of colour and design that can be brought out from a stain on a wall of a long deserted house – a beauty which can surpass the original beauty of the wall. It might be found in the form of a rusty, stained, derelict piece of equipment that, when isolated to its essence, can surpass the beauty of the piece when it was functional. It may be found in the study of contrasts and tension in images of people, be they doing routine activities, or being in the act of discovering or fully experiencing. A photographer friend, residing in a European city that I was about to visit; remarked that he looked forward to “seeing his city through my eyes”. As fate would have it, a couple of images taken by me in his city were published. Similarly, I am often struck by the beauty of images taken by photographers from other countries on their visits to the part of the world in which I reside. When I visit a place that I have never seen before, I am free of the constraints of familiarity. That is the easy part. The more difficult endeavor is to look at the familiar in new ways; or in the words of both artist and therapist, to “resolve the problem”, or to view it in a unique, or creative manner. The matter does not end with the viewing. I must then use various equipment and techniques to reproduce what my eyes saw. My visions may be unique to myself, but also need to be recognizable by others in order to say that I have been successful in my artistic quest.
When I bought a space on Flickr a couple of years ago, I made the acquaintance of a fine photographer from Toronto (and much younger than I), who indicated in her profile that she was “too old to be an emerging photographer”. I agree that the young folks starting out in their photographic careers need exposure and recognition. None the less, I chided my acquaintance as I believe there is a place, and a need, for exposure and recognition for ‘experienced’ emerging photographers’: those who may be embarking on photography as a second career, who perhaps see the world through more mature, but less sharp eyes. If anyone shares this sentiment, I would be happy to communicate with you. If there are enough of us, perhaps we could put together a ‘seniors’ version of Flash Forward:>).

Sometimes I place the copyright notice directly on the photo; other times I do not, if I think it would be too much of a distraction.
