While living in Japan, I wrote two award-winning books, ‘Kanji Pictographix’ and ‘Kana Pictographics.’ Returning to the States, I worked as a book designer and taught information design at Art Center, Pasadena and digital imaging at The American Film Institute.

Blessed with a poor memory, I developed a niche in illustrated books and websites using visual mnemonics. FiftyStatesOfMind.com teaches geography (think of the boot of Italy approach applied to the states), AtomFamilies.com turns the elements of the periodic table into memorable human characters, and KanjiPictographix.com teaches Japanese kanji and kana.

Today I live in Northern California and run the design, illustration, and photography studio, Papernapkin.com. I am at work on a six-box set of kanji flash cards called Kanji PictoCards and an illustrated English vocabulary book entitled Vizcabulary.
