..Χρόνια πριν (δεν θυμάμαι πότε ακριβώς, αλλά θα ’ναι πάνω από δέκα χρόνια ) είχε έρθει στην μικρή μας πόλη ένας φωτογράφος (..που επίσης δεν θυμάμαι το όνομα του.. ) να δώσει σεμινάριο..
Μας είπε λοιπόν ότι το πιο σημαντικό πράγμα στη φωτογραφία είναι να ξέρεις ΓΙΑΤΙ φωτογραφίζεις.
Μας ζήτησε να το σκεφτούμε και να του απαντήσουμε την επόμενη μέρα..

Εγώ δεν ήξερα.
Και το σκέφτηκα.
και απάντησα με το παρακάτω κείμενο..

Μερικές ερωτήσεις ακόμη γύρω από την ερώτηση «γιατί φωτογραφίζω»

Τι είναι αυτό που με ωθεί να παίρνω τους δρόμους με την φωτογραφική μου μηχανή;
Γιατί βλέπω τον κόσμο τεμαχισμένο σε παραλληλόγραμμα;
Με ποια κριτήρια διαλέγω να απομονώσω το τάδε κομμάτι από τα άπειρα που υπάρχουν γύρω μου;
Ποιες διεργασίες συμβαίνουν στο μυαλό μου κοιτάζοντας;
Το μυαλό μου, η ματιά μου και η ψυχή μου.. Σε τι ποσοστό το καθένα από αυτά συμμετέχει λίγο πριν το κλικ;
Ποιο υπερισχύει σε κάθε φωτογραφία;
Ποια φωτογραφία μ’ αρέσει περισσότερο;
..αυτή που έφτιαξα με το μυαλό μου;
..αυτή που έπιασε η ματιά μου;
..αυτή που ζήτησε η ψυχή μου;
..ή μήπως και τα τρία μαζί σε αρμονία..
..hungry Eye ? ή μήπως EyeQ;
Και ο τρόπος που καδράρω και συνθέτω τι ικανοποιεί μέσα μου;
Σε ποιους εσωτερικούς κανόνες υπακούει;
Πάντα στους ίδιους;
Και πως διαμορφώθηκαν αυτοί οι κανόνες;
Και τι ψάχνω με τις φωτογραφίες μου;
Γιατί διαλέγω αυτό το θέμα να φωτογραφίσω και όχι κάποιο άλλο;
Και τι να πω για τις φωτογραφίες που έκανα με τόσο ενθουσιασμό και μετά δεν μ’ αρέσουν;
Πού έκανα λάθος;
Σκατοκατασταση.
Αλκοολίκι.
Και για ποιον φωτογραφίζω;
Για τον εαυτό μου μόνο;
Τότε γιατί θέλω να δείξω τις φωτογραφίες μου ,έστω και σε αυστηρά περιορισμένο αριθμό ατόμων? Και ποιοι είναι αυτοί;
Πως τους επιλέγω;
Ζητώ την κριτική τους;
Ζητώ επιβεβαίωση;
Αμφισβήτηση;
Θαυμασμό;
Για τον εαυτό μου τις κάνω τελικά τις φωτογραφίες μου ή για τους άλλους;
..μήπως θυμώνω κιόλας όταν μου λένε ότι δεν τους άρεσαν;
..μήπως προσαρμόζω κιόλας τις επόμενες φωτογραφίες στα γούστα τους;
Και ο θόρυβος της μηχανής;
Γιατί μ’ αρέσει το «κλικ»;
Γιατί αυτή η ικανοποίηση όταν στο στόχαστρο της μηχανής έχω αυτό που βλέπω, θέλω, φαντάστηκα, σκέφτηκα, ζήτησα ..;
Το κλείστρο είναι η σκανδάλη και ο φακός η κάνη;
Είναι όπλο η μηχανή μου;
Το αρχέγονο ένστικτο του κυνηγού ικανοποιώ;
Γιατί αυτή η ευχαρίστηση να με πλημμυρίζει κάθε που νομίζω ή που αισθάνομαι ότι το κλικ μου ικανοποίησε αυτό που το μυαλό μου ,το μάτι μου ή η ψυχή μου ζήτησε;
Και ποια είναι η φωτογραφία που με ενδιαφέρει και για χάρη της ξεκινώ την περιπέτεια;
Η φωτογραφία που «βοηθά»;
η φωτογραφία που «τέρπει»;
η φωτογραφία που «θυμίζει»;
η μήπως αυτή που «πωλείται»;
η αυτή που «θαυμάζεται»; ...

..τελικά ούτε που ξέρω γιατί φωτογραφίζω.. ...

..και για την προσαρμογή

..δέκα χρόνια μετά ..εξακολουθώ περισσότερο να ρωτάω και λιγότερο να απαντάω..
..ΚΑΙ ίσως να είναι καλύτερα έτσι...

...Years ago (dont really remember how long, more than ten years it must have been) there was a photographer in our town (whom i also dont remember the name).. to give a lecture..
So he told us that the most important thing in photography is to know WHY you are shooting.
He asked us to thing about that, and answer the very next day.

I didn't know.
But i thought of it.
And i answered with the following text..

Some more questions around the main question "why am i shooting"

What makes me want to take the roads with my camera?
Why the world looks cut in rectangular pieces to me?
What makes me want to cut specific pieces, elements and isolate only some?
What processes my mind does when looking?
My mind, my eyes and my soul. In what rate everything
involves before the click?
What overcomes in every photo?
Which photo i like the most?
The one i made with my mind?
the one i made with my eyes?
the one i made with my soul?
Or all three combined together?
...hungry Eye /or eyeQ?
And the way i frame and synthesize.. what really satisfies me?
In which internal rules i obey?
Always the same ones?
How those rules did form?
What am i looking in my photographs?
Why i prefer this subject and not another?
What to say about the photos i shot so enthusiastically and then didn't like them?
Where i was wrong?
Fucked situation.
Alcoholism
For whom do i shoot?
My self only?
Then why i want to show my photos, even to a so strictly limited number of people? who are those?
How do i choose them?
I ask for their criticism?
Asking for confirmation?
Denial?
Admiration?
..am I shooting for myself or for the others?
.. am i getting angry when told they didn't like them?
..am i adjusting my next photos in their taste?
And the sound of the camera?
Why i like that click?
Why that satisfaction when in the shutter i have trapped everything
i saw, desired, imagined, thought, asked..?
Shutter is the trigger and lens the bore?
Is my camera my weapon?
That primitive instinct of the hunter that drives me?
Why i do get that pleasure that floats me every time i think that my click captured what my mind/eyes/soul asked?
And what would that photo be that triggers me to start a new adventure?
A Photograph that "helps"?
A photograph that "satisfies"?
A photograph that "reminds"?
or the one that "sales"?
or a photograph that "enthusiaze"?

... after all i don't even know why i am shooting...

...and for the adaptation,
