The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has served the citizens of South Carolina since 1824. It has expanded from a small private college for the training of physicians to a state university with a medical center and six colleges for the education of a broad range of health professionals, biomedical scientists and other health related personnel. MUSC has been named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the country's best hospitals in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, kidney disease and rheumatology. The MUSC Children's Hospital cardiology department was also named as one of the best children's hospitals for heart and heart surgery.
