H.G. WOOD PROJECT's photostream |
I have a B.S. in photography and a M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies. I am currently a doctoral candidate working on a Ph.D in arts and technology at the University of Texas at Dallas. As part of my doctoral work, I have spent the last two years archiving, digitizing and preparing this collection for exhibition.
This collection consists of over 800 perfectly preserved 6x9 negatives taken in the U.S. by professional photographer H.G. Wood during the Great Depression from 1936-1940. In addition to portraits and landscapes, H.G. Wood documented the The Sawtooth Range Riders trip from Ketchum, Idaho starting in 1936 to the world's fair in New York, N.Y. (1939-1940) The trip was done as a publicity stunt by three cowboys, H.G. Wood, Ted Terry and Vick Lusk. Along the way the Sawtooth Range Riders stopped to entertain, take pictures and perform tricks with their horse Silver Sally. Ted Terry road Hitler the famous Overland bull the entire way and was the only person to actually make the entire trip. At times H.G. Wood and Vick Lusk were not present. H.G. Wood is the person who actually came up with the idea for the publicity stunt. He was also trained by the military to take pictures after this trip was completed.
