Jason McCoy Inc. is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Kevin Larmon.
Larmon continues his search for the divide between abstraction and figuration, fusing expressive color fields with hints of referential objects. At times, he employs collage to evoke unusually dense mélanges of rich visual and textural information. The descriptive titles of these paintings, such as “Figure in Moss” or “Wooded Field”, might offer possible starting points for interpretation, but are by no means intended as instructions for our imagination. In fact, Larmon rejects confinements and obvious structure. Not unlike forks in the road, his titles suggest options rather than solutions, spinning his tales without concern for traditional narratives. While in this group of work he draws from nature, Asian culture, figurative references and art historical references for inspiration, his interest in the creation of emotive themes is abstract. His forms are fluid, biomorphic and seem forever changing. In this most recent body of work, smoke and fog are frequent associations that aid in providing each composition with a distinct atmosphere, as well as clear sense of mystique.
Born in Syracuse, NY, in 1955, Larmon has exhibited extensively since the early 1980s. His work is in the collection of various museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
