Here's a thought...

Those of us becoming increasingly used to the 'art' of sending text messages & e-mail, appear to have forgotten the 'art' of capitalization.

Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse...

Busy, busy, busy, but happy with it!

Really enjoying Flickr and I'm talking with some really great people, but boy, does it consume all your spare time! Now here's a thought, that will doubtless put the cat among the pigeons!

Glittery stars and such like are all very well, especially when you first start posting on Flickr, but after a while they do seem less than sincere, in fact, more of an easy way to fulfill a commitment to posting on a site.

Personally I don't think we should be blackmailed into writing comments. We all enjoy praise for our work and also appreciate what other people post; this is how we learn and get inspiration for our own work.

Those of us who are conscientious will be looking and posting comments on the pictures we like any way. Those that don't post probably never will, and if they do, you can't be certain they mean what they say.

The other issue here is quality. If people are posting awards to get their quota, they will probably be posting and commenting on the first pictures they come across. I saw a bowl of fruit, that was less than good with a zillion awards; doesn't that just devalue the good stuff?

How are we supposed to learn, when everything is brilliant?

We aren't all world class photographers and if we post a shot that has flaws I for one want to know about it, so that next time I will not make the same mistakes. Some comments will be useful and some not, that's the problem with a subjective approach to appraisals, but surely we are old enough and wise enough to be able to filter what we think is appropriate?

Richard

P.S. Looking forward to getting an award for my discussion!!!!
