I was born, raised and educated in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. After completing graduate studies at McGill University, I moved to the city of Victoria, on the marvelous West Coast of Canada (Vancouver Island). For most of my professional life I taught biochemistry, immunology, nutrition and organic chemistry, topics which obviously have very little to do with digital art, my new and current passion. After retiring from teaching, I slipped gently into the world of visual art and began experimenting with photo-editing software. Currently, I’m immersed in the utilization of photo-manipulation techniques and their use in the production of digital abstracts. Usually I begin each work with either a blank screen-page, or with a visually rich, cropped region of a digital photograph. The digital manipulations made possible by currently available software programs are extensive, and obviously can be used in countless permutations and combinations. However, I must confess that the images I generate are usually the result of unrehearsed and surprisingly unforeseen digital occurrences. Rather than being created with specific artistic goals or outcomes in mind, my images are almost always discovered by serendipitous accident. And the process is akin to childish play. Occasionally, these efforts result in the appearance of an image that pleases and excites my eyes and mind. I firmly believe that digital cameras and photo-editing software programs are democratizing the art-world, and as a former scientist I am grateful and happy to be a humble participant in this wonderful, free-wheeling artistic revolution.
