The Coney Island History Project, founded in 2004, is a a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that aims to increase awareness of Coney Island's legendary and colorful past and to encourage appreciation of the Coney Island neighborhood of today. For information about programs and activities, or to become a member or volunteer visit www.coneyislandhistory.org
Since the Coney Island History Project's inception in 2004 with a portable recording booth on the Boardwalk, followed by the opening of the Coney Island Hall of Fame in 2005 and the inaugural season of our exhibition center under the Cyclone in 2007, we have proudly offered "Free Admission for One and All!" at our exhibits and events. In 2011, the History Project will continue that tradition at a new exhibition center in the heart of Deno's Wonder Wheel Park.
Open on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the center presents a series of exhibits, events and performances and displays historic artifacts from Coney Island's colorful past.
The History Project's flickr photostream began as a visual diary of visitors and activities at the exhibition center during the 2008 season. We enjoy it so much that we recently launched two flickr groups:
The purpose of our flickr group “Coney Island is Alive and Kicking and Welcomes Visitors in 2009!” is to show the world that contrary to news reports, Coney Island Is NOT Closed. The group showcases the best of the best images of attractions that will *definitely* be here to welcome visitors in 2009.

Our flickr group “Coney Island History Project Activities from 2005 through 2009” is looking for photos of CIHP activities and exhibitions, both in our Coney Island exhibition center and off-site venues. Photos of friends and family visiting our exhibition center under the Cyclone roller coaster and participating in CIHP events are welcome.www.flickr.com/groups/coneyislandhistoryproject/
Our award-winning website www.coneyislandhistory.org includes an oral history archive, a searchable online archive containing more than 1,000 images and items from our collection, an interactive development map illustrating the changing fortunes of the central amusement district, and a blog called Ask Mr. Coney Island, where site visitors can ask questions about the area's past, present, and future. If you would like to receive a monthly e-newsletter "What's New in Coney?" featuring news and upcoming events in Coney Island please sign up on our website.
The History Project’s mission is to create an oral history of the area; organize exhibitions, lectures and performances; and honor community leaders and amusement pioneers through the Coney Island Hall of Fame. Emphasizing community involvement, the Coney Island History Project teaches young people the techniques of oral history and develops programs in conjunction with local schools, museums, and other organizations.
Visitors are invited to record their Coney Island memories for our oral history archive using the History Center’s interactive recording technology. Selected audio interviews are available on our website as part of our Coney Island Voices exhibit. Interviews are also conducted by appointment in person or by telephone. People who would like to be interviewed can sign up on our website.
The History Project’s executive director Charles Denson is a Coney Island native, a noted historian, and the author of the award-winning Coney Island: Lost and Found and Wild Ride: A Coney Island Roller Coaster Family.
