What is CHI?

Cultural Heritage Imaging drives development and adoption of practical digital imaging and preservation solutions for people passionate about saving humanity's treasures today, before they are lost. CHI is not an archive or a museum itself, we create technology that enables prominent institutions like the University of California at Berkeley and the Worcester Art Museum to document, preserve and share their collections.

OK, Sounds Nice. Now What Specifically Does CHI Do?

With easy-to-learn methods employing familiar equipment, CHI’s goal is to create new solutions that are both compelling and straightforward. To develop these approaches, CHI collaborates with leading cultural heritage professionals and digital imaging experts to craft practical digital working methods compatible with existing workplace cultures. New two- and three-dimensional digital techniques can communicate far more information about source materials than is currently available through traditional sources such as drawings, printed reports, motion pictures, and photographs.

Our photo sets document our organization's field work. Some of the photos show artifacts from archaeological sites and museums using an imaging technique called Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI). This technique allows an archaeologist, conservationist, or a curator to see details that are missed with other techniques. The sets posted show work that we did between 2005 and 2009. Each set is accompanied with captions and a brief explanation of the specific project.

How Do CHI Photos on Flickr Differ from Photos Posted on the Website - www.c-h-i.org?

The photos on our website illustrate specific technologies that we are developing or applying and serve as our professional portfolio. The photos on Flickr are meant to provide a look behind the scenes at the work that we do with museum professionals, archaeologists and other cultural heritage professionals. Some of the photos are the products of technologies such as RTIs, but most of them are photo-journalism chronicling our projects. Much of our field work takes place in spectacular, historically significant locations: we want our supporters to be able to share our excitement!
