Little is known about Captain Magnificent, other than his name is John Karpinsky, he currently lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and that he puts his life on Flickr. The fledgling amateur photographer got his start in photography after convincing his wife to let him purchase his first digital SLR shortly before the birth of their son. He got the camera in order to document his child's life and fulfill his role as dadarazzi. Several fairly expensive accessories (and one whole camera) later and he has convinced himself of his own photographic genius, even if the rest of the world cannot see it. True artists are never recognized in their own lifetime, anyway.
He enjoys listening to pretentious hipster folk music, the more banjo the better.
It's probably best not to take anything he says seriously.
The Captain also dabbles in illustration, and although not classically trained by any means, he still attempts to bring ideas that bounce around in his cranium to life. His favorite tools include Adobe Illustrator and a drawing tablet.
Here's links to his Day of the Dead series:

Prints are available in two sizes on Etsy. The Captain would like to point out that all proceeds from sales of these prints go to a family directly impacted by Multiple Sclerosis, namely his own. You can read bits and pieces about his experience here:

"Captain Magnificent is the inverse Dorian Gray of Flickr. He gets older while his avatar remains a baby.
I heard a rumor that he used to go by the name of detective.wojciehowicz, which is a funny sort of name for a Hawaiian.
Despite his checkered past and his insatiable appetite for Drake's Ring Dings, Colonel Mag-Lite is a hell of a backgammon player and he jousts like nobody's business."26th August, 2010

"Staff-sergeant Above-average-o demonstrates in his photostream a slavish devotion to the idea that he should try to make the prosaic world of Wisconsin and Wisconsin-ites accessible to the world at large. I question that kind of thinking, but I suppose at some level you gotta admire his tenacity"

"I like Captain Magnificent so much, I count him as a friend.
He only counts me as a contact. Perhaps because I am constantly trying to steal his child. But, I'm not bitter."26th August, 2010

"Standing on the edge
Of the Hoover Dam
I'm on the centerline
Right between two states of mind
And if the wind from the traffic
Should blow me away, I know that captain magnificent would be there.
Not only to pick up the pieces of a life that had fallen apart, but to take pictures of it as well.
And really, don't we all need to document that which is "The worst thing that has ever happened to us"?
And who better to do it than this man ?"26th August, 2010

alisonhulot says:
"Captain Magnificent has the swishiest sword and the most intriguing uniform of anyone on flickr. If I ever had to make it out of enemy territory without ammunition or any back up, this is the man I’d like to have along. He also has world-class expertise in cheese making, though he keeps this a close secret. Don’t make this man a contact if you don’t enjoy laughing."

Furba the cat says:
"I knew Captain Magnificent many years ago when he was known as Captain Magnificent. He was a different person then: his time in the Turkish harem changed him in ways you would not like to imagine. He takes photographs, too, I believe. I may even have faved one."
