I've been birding since spring 2007 with my principle birding location being Grove, followed by Sandwich Bay, Dungeness and my home village of Kingsdown, but in reality I'll go anywhere in Kent given enough temptation..
I started phographing birds in summer 2007 with a Panasonic Lumix but soon wanted more and puchased a Sony alpha 200 plus a Sigma 170-500mm lens in March 2008.
In April 2009 I purchased a Sony 70-400mm SSM G lens and soon after upgraded to the Sony 70-400.
Without a doubt the Sony lens out performs the sigma despite only being a 400 at the top end.
It's taken some time to get used to but I now shoot in raw.
Most of my birding takes place in East Kent and within ~20 miles of home with the odd trip a bit further afield (Dungess, Elmley, Rye).
And once or twice a year a small group of us travel to more distant destinations - Mid Wales, Yorkshire, Calais region.
