I have been taking photos since the age of 9 and some of the events and places I have been have made me wish I had taken more photos.

I go to strange places and learn about them. I am not deterred by any border guard or regulations. I patiently apply for permission to go to places deemed impossible to go to. I do not believe what I hear about any particular culture or economic system unless I have been there. I have been doing this since 1969.

I am an observer and document what I see so my photos are not very artistic but document time and place.
During the last two years I have photographed China and North Korea and should be doing so one more time in 2010. I would like to photograph central Asia - the Turkish peoples from China to northern Iran. I thrive on places that are difficult to get to.

    skinnylawyer says:

"Ray has excellent coverage of "forbidden" countries - be they Red China or the Soviet Union of the Cold War Era, or North Korea of today. His photos tell the story authentically, conveying not only the countries' official propaganda, but the real people and their stories the propaganda is trying to cover up. Ray's North Korean photographs are an inspiration for me and my possible future travels to such "forbidden" lands. I hope to tell authentic stories like he does."
