My Photography Story
It all started when I was 6 years old. My parents bought me a little Keystone 110 camera for my Kindergarten graduation. I took that little camera with me everywhere for years, and I shot a small mountain of pictures with it throughout my childhood. I still have all those pictures in a shoebox.
I graduated to a "real" camera when my father got a Canon AE-1 Program for his work. I was in middle school at the time, and I learned all of the basics of photography on that camera. I borrowed that camera a lot through high school and college, shooting for my high school and college newspapers among many other things. When they upgraded cameras at work, I grabbed the AE-1 before they threw it out. I still have it and pull it out every now and then.
After I graduated from college, I moved to the mountains of Boone, NC. Around this time my work purchased a Minolta Maxxum, and I borrowed it on a regular basis. Having so much beautiful wilderness and the Blue Ridge Parkway nearby kindled an interest in nature and animal photography, subjects I still pursue. The parkway also provided great locations for some experiments in astrophotography.
From 1997-2007 I didn't do much photography. Too busy with work, life, and all those other things. In the ten years I'd been absent from Photography, everything had moved from film to digital. I asked Santa for, and got, a Nikon D40x, an entry-level dSLR, for Christmas 2007. I jumped back into photography with both feet, shooting concerts, weddings, nature, animals, anything else that interested me. I know that some people still have an attachment to film, but digital photography is superior to film photography in so many ways, I can't see myself ever going back.
After spending two years with the D40x I ran into many of its limitations, so I asked Santa for a Nikon D300s. Santa delivered again, and I'm looking forward to many years of capturing and creating beautiful images for myself and others.
