"Photography isn't looking, it's feeling." McCullin.

Photography, reading and wondering around second hand bookshops and galleries (with a big dollop of travel thrown in) are my biggest passions.

If you want to hear me gabber on about my work the link to the film of my Mini Click talk in Brighton it is here on Vimeo. Kindly filmed by Stephen.

Cosimo Matteini (busy, will catch up soon) says:

    "Minimalist, but with a heart

This is how I first described James' work. James manages to find beauty in all things. But it's light and shadows that he really masters. His beautiful B&W photos (but when he does colour, those colours are so good) concentrate on small details, which would normally be unobserved. And he makes them centre stage.

However, although minimalist in his approach, he lacks the fastidious and clinical precision that sometimes makes this type of photos a bit sterile. His work show signs of a tension, perhaps some frailty, emotions, slight imperfections, which add a heart to it.

    What a fantastic photographer"

"following withwill's photostream is not just a joy, it is an education. his eye for light and shadow and graphic composition is consistently astounding. i always look forward to his next masterpiece. he finds beauty and creates poetry from the everyday corners the rest of us would pass by without noticing.

following his work has made me begin to see things completely differently. it is only the best kind of artist who can create magic in any situation, and who can inspire others to begin to see the magic as well.
what a gift you have shared with all of us, James!"

    Ethan in Zürich says:

"James has the gift and the keen eye to create interesting, poetic and exciting images out of the most ordinary, mundane and fleeting objects. Shadows on the ground, a notebook from the inside out, reflections on a wall, structures of a building. He knows exactly when to move in close and when to take a step or two back to capture the entire field of vision. This is art in a very pure sense, to see and be able to capture things or moments in time most of us do not see. While his focus is on black & white, his color fotos are no less fascinating and show the same wonderful attention to detail, overall composition and a subtle play with shapes, textures and color.

There is a beautiful combination of flow and preciseness in his work that I really appreciate. The result are fotos of simple yet profound beauty full of graphical and organic elements which are a joy to look at. I am sure you will agree!"

"The world through withwill's lens is a beautiful one. He shares my love of abstracts and graphic composition. His skill at seeing light and shadow in unconventional ways is unmatched and I often return to his stream for inspiration. He just knows when to zoom in and close crop or back up and take it all in.

Very generous with his kind words and encouragement, withwill is a Flickr friend I feel fortunate to have. If you've not yet done so, please take a moment or three and look through his stream... you won't be disappointed."
