Dear flickr-friends - I'm taking a break until August. Stockholm here I come!!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am a Swedish sociologist, working and living in Managua, Nicaragua. I have known Managua for more than 20 years, although I have not lived here all that time, and I have from day one been absolutely absorbed by the city's violent and dramatic history, but also by its stunning sunsets and its hidden beauties.

One of my "hobbies", or rather passions, is searching for, excavating, photographing and writing about the social and material layers of the city's history. One example is looking for traces of the 1972 earthquake that almost completely destroyed the old center of Managua, another the layers left by both the Somoza dictatorship and the Sandinista uproar and revolution of the 1970s and 1980s.

January 2010:

I wrote the above when I opened my flickr pro account about a year ago in Feburary 2009. Much has changed since then, and then again, perhaps not so much. A circle is closing in on itself. I've spent this year on flickr exploring high contrast, high and low key, becoming more and more abstract in my image making, eager to carve out the essentials in and of the images.

I feel I have learned so much about my own gustos, through working with my images, but also through looking and trying to understand how other people's works were achieved: thoughts, philosophy, composition. Hardly never about technical stuff - I am still in deep denial about most of that part of my camera and still use only the most basic of editing software.

If I started out with a "pure" documentary interest and then gradually during 2009 took this abstracted turn, lately I have felt my documentary urge coming on strongly again. Perhaps this time it is prepared to merge with my developments within high contrast and graphics, ready to play with me and my abstracted vision of the world.

This is something I really want to pursue, and hopefully merge with my academic work; developing strongly my own style and techniques in visualising in images & words the (hi)story about us humans that the material world around us is just waiting to tell.

I put my images in three basic, more often than not overlapping, sets: "Ambience and Documentary", "Abstracts in colour" and "Geometry and Graphics". Moreover, I have organised my pics in fave groups - which could serve as some form of "interest" sets, if you like.

You find my sets here.

I have grown very fond of my flickr-contacts and have with time learned to try to keep a relatively short and "real" list, that is, a list of people that I am actually in touch with on a fairly regular basis. Sometimes I interact with my contacts through groups, sometimes directly in eachother's streams.

From time to time I take a time-out when work's overwhelming, but I'll always be back! I tend to hoard ready-made images and do massive uploads :).

HAPPY VIEWING and VERY WELCOME TO kroons kollektion!

PS: But PLEASE, no flickriver badges or whatever they are called attached to your comments or awards, they will be gone in a split second! Advertise yourself and your work through a good constructive comment instead!

"This is an ego-driven testimonial: what has Kroons done for me? Looking through her stream, from the first to the last, has been for me a masterclass on artistic development, like watching a beautiful flower unfold and bloom. She now has a style uniquely her own, so that her photos are identifiable only from a thumbnail. But her photos have more than style, they have substance, and it is the combination of those two things that makes Kroons a true artist. I have learned a great deal from her, about my work and my self. Not a bad result for a virtual relationship!"

"I have never done this before, but if one person deserves my first Testimonial it's Ann. From the first moment i saw her pics i was impressed, not only by her kind of pics of that moment, but -- we came rather immediately to a talk -- also in the way she was open to the world in which she finds her images. First she was the explorer, part of her job and she collected her pics partly because of documentary reasons.

But with her cam she also explored more and more her own vision on the world. She discovered a new language without words in which she could talk about that world.

Was I able to help her in the beginning with some kind of technical matters, soon i could only be surprised and astonished about her steep learning curve and i could only learn from her work. But always she stayed friendly, warm and open to encourage me and to welcome my "images in words", my comments.

I admire her development in her work (i think it's really incredible what she has achieved in the period i know her now, less than a year), her uncompromising manner to find her own way, also when they are new and rather unknown.
She knows to find some basic kind of archetypes with which she speaks directly to the primaeval images in our mind. In any case in my mind :))) She is a master of HC (high contrast), playful with light and shadow and she speaks in elementary forms (lines, straight and curved ones, circles, squares) and textures which she finds in the real world but knows to abstract to a higher level. But always with a reminiscence of the real world.

Ann, i thank you for this great revelation and for the friendship i've found.
