the trick to saying i love you is not to over-do it, not to become that gushing teenage girl, diary entries with heart dotted i's. that's why your love life is a train wreck, a string of girls biting their bottom lip 'i need some space,' 'i just think we're at different places,' too many times you've heard 'you're smothering me'.

you remember your grandmother saying something about nothing being better than a bump on the head for a well-learned lesson. broken hearts also apply, you think.

and so you invent a million different ways to say 'i love you'. you have your subtle ways, like cooking 3-minute ramen and putting an egg in it, 'here, you look hungry'. or sliding over on the couch and patting the seat next to you, 'watch this part, it's fucking awesome.'

then there are your the blatant ways, the nights when you crawl into his bed, tell him you can't sleep, wanna chat? the times when you stand next to him and leave your hand open for him to slide his in, hold it gently, genuinely.

(you really told him, once. too drunk and too young to fight it, ‘i love you,’.)
