Being the only brother of three sisters, it was my job from a very young age to assist my father in his darkroom, developing his black and white photographs. From mixing the developer and fixing chemicals to drying the postcard sized prints on a mirror like stainless steel heated plate, to give the paper the "glossy" look. It was not easy in the sixties.

(Difficult times, the 60's. It was "WYSIWYG" all the way. When the camera "CLICKED", that was it! No Photoshop, no Picasa, no changing ANYTHING!!!)

Only later I developed the urge to start taking pictures myself. I bought my Miranda 35mm SLR in 1973. Just out of school. I took about a thousand 35mm colour slides. I never really liked BW pictures. Maybe the overdose as a kid in the darkroom.

About two years ago, I scanned all of my slides to digital format and the hobby flared up again. I bought a Pentax K100D Super dSLR. I am still learning the features. The primary reason was that all my existing lenses from the Miranda, .75mm screw in type, were all made by Pentax. An add saying that my existing model could take ALL the older Pentax lenses. Only if you have the fine thread to bayonette coupler rings. This they did not tell me. I am still looking for those.
Well, I use the versatile 18-55mm zoom (standard) and also the 75-300mm zoom for all my present needs.
Lately I try to learn more about "macro" photography. I just love it!

I am a grandpa now and I am practising to retire shortly, camera in hand...
en ja, ons praat afrikaans in die huis!
