The best fortune cookie I've ever gotten says, "You're doomed to a life of forever traveling abroad and to be able to afford it." I have lived and worked in over 30 countries, and I have 12 years of professional experience in the Middle East. I have worked as an archaeologist, social science researcher, journalist and humanitarian aid worker in Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Sudan and Syria. I have given hundreds of media interviews, published dozens of articles and co-edited September 11: Contexts and Consequences, a 600-page anthology of essential readings on Islam, terrorism and global politics (with Misha Klein, 2001). I have provided consulting expertise in communication and leadership to NGOs, private companies, United Nations agencies and USAID. I speak frequently about current international issues at university campuses throughout North America. A former Fulbright scholar and National Science Foundation fellow, I am writing a PhD dissertation titled “Humanity Must Be Defended: War, Politics and Humanitarian Equipment,” based on field research in Iraq and Sudan.
