Artists Francesca Danieli and Julia Kim Smith co-founded 100 Survivors in 2004 when Danieli discovered she had metastatic breast cancer. They decided to collaborate on a project about her struggle with breast cancer and created Project 10, which evolved into 100 Survivors, the non-profit website. Since Danieli passed away in 2006, Smith has continued as curator of the project and volunteer.
