Former UK arts administrator. Lived in Tokyo since 1996 relocating to Bath in 2010.
With the advent of digital cameras I became involved in kite aerial photography using compact cameras. I then acquired a dslr intending to take some 'proper' photos. However this noble aim became subverted when I fell under the influence of SebPrzd and his groundbreaking photostream.
I am at present an equirectanglist. I find the flat 2:1 equirectangular image and its derivatives to be quite fascinating. I've been lucky to find myself living in a part of the world which is uniquely interesting and I have no need to be 'creative' with my pictures. Capturing and displaying the richness of what's around me is pleasure enough.
Frustrated sometimes by the equipment available I have made various devices to make the taking of panoramas simpler and easier. The latest PanoTool and PanoCalc, which are iPhone apps, can be found at www.panotool.com.

Simon's equirectangulars have a beautiful light, a precise geometry (see the precision of the floor). They are always well centered, so that the equirectangular projection is pleasant even before enjoying the immersive view. See how he used the stereographic projection in a way that magnifies the cherry trees, and smooth the crowd that was sitting underneath.
