“There is only you and your camera. The limitations in your photography are in yourself, for what we see is what we are.”

Ernst Haas

Traveler. Journalist. Photographer. Have been in five continents and more than 90 countries. Loves family (has 4 wonderful kids), life and the sea. Write about places, people and emotions. I'm here to share those passions. My traveler coup de foudre is New Zealand, the most beautiful place I've been so far. Other favourites are: Goa, Tortola, Saint Lucia, Bali, Java, Buenos Aires, La Habana, Riga, Lanzarote, Bazaruto, Marrakech, Paraty, Brugge, Venezia, Istanbul, London, Miami, Cape Town, Paris, Auckland, Dunedin and Christchurch (NZ), New York, Ericeira, Tomar and Lisboa, my beloved hometown.

LOOKING FOR

Some things about me:

01 # Family is my n.º 1 priority. I have four wonderful kids. They are by far the best thing I did in my life. So proud of them. I was born in Lisbon and live here since 1980. Before, I lived in four different cities. I had a marvellous childhood and studied Law in Lisbon.

02 # My wife loves traveling, too. She has the soul, the spirit, the eyes, the energy and the compassion of a true traveler. My present travel-dream is a long African journey with her. Perhaps Kenya & Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique.

03 # New Zealand still is my traveler «coup de foudre». Was there for 18 days [doing a travel feature] and loved the country, a kind of National Geographic «live» 24 hours a day with some stunning cities like Dunedin, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Napier, a surprising open-air Art Deco museum.

04 # Three of my favourite photographers are french: Henri Cartier-Bresson (sense and sensibility), Yann-Arthur Bertrand (hello up there) and Patrick Demarchelier (a natural). Last year (June 2010) I was invited to the Photography Exhibition «Olha!» in City of London Festival and had two photos bought for the collection of Sir Lenny Henry, a famous english actor, comedian, writer and tv presenter. It was cool as he chose himself the pair. One of them is this below:

EXHIBITION IN LONDON: «A LUSOPHONIC VISION»

05 # Love to laugh. I do anything for a good laugh. Laughing is a signal of intelligence. Love the ocean. Love to write. Love to think. I directed the best portuguese travel magazine for years, working with old friends. We were a great team. It was pure delight. Now, amongst others, I write about travels and places / football / and interview people for the biggest national newspaper

06 # Met the Great Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg in 1996. Shook his hand: what an honor! Two days after, in Pretoria, saw a man dying in the street few seconds after being shot in the head.

07 # Love the feminine behaviour, the feminine non-sense, the feminine sensuality, the feminine intelligence, the feminine strength. Latvia, Poland, Italy and Argentina are the countries where I saw the most beautiful women. Portugal is clearly on top ten.

08 # Have been in more than 90 countries in five continents but never visited the Açores/Azores archipelago, a lushy greeny wonderland in the middle of Atlantic Ocean. Shame on me – as Açores is Portugal.

09 # Quit smoking on 31st December 2010. Love sushi, sashimi, red wine and drink 6 espresso-coffees a day. I do work a lot. And I am still alive - and kicking. I can tell you two good reasons to work as free-lance – Freedom!, above all; second, the marvellous unecessity to deal with mediocre, uncompetent or boring people. But there are a lot of contras if you work as a free-lance in Portugal

10 # I was in Hungary, doing a travel feature on Budapest, when I met the former olympic champion swimmer, beautiful Krisztina Egerszegi. After the interview, she asked me to marry her. I said no.

11 # The World as I see it, in three of four words.

Europe: History – Civilization - Style - Sophistication - Arrogance
Africa: Nature – Drama - Land - Smell - Danger
Asia: Mysticism – Soul – Grandeur - Sagesse - Excess
North America (Alaska included): Energy – Inovation – Competition – Excellence - No Mercy
Central & South America: Heat – Rhythm – Colour - Sensuality - Drama
Oceania: Adventure – Nature - Space – Freedom - Beauty

12 # Hate loosing time with useless/conventional conversation with people that means absolutely nothing to me or to my life. This is getting worse with age. Sometimes I feel I am being rude, even non-social. This is sad because usually I am very polite with everyone. But time is becoming so important to me.

13 # I was in Bucharest, Romania, when Mr. Ceausescu and his wife were forced to attend a surprise bullet-party. They were found dead after dinner. By the soldiers who shot them.

14 # I have been a loyal Liverpool FC supporter for more than 25 years. When you hear the Kop singing «You Will Never Walk Alone» you realize how great is the passion, the spirit and the comraderie in this club. Love the spirit and the legend. «Walk on... (walk on)… Walk on... (walk on) … With hope in your heart ... And you'll never walk alone …You'll NEVER walk alone!». Come on Reds

15 # My cultural references are mostly European but I am an open minded person: could easily live in almost every place of the World. As a passionate reader and researcher of WW2, I have a strong emotional connection with Polish and Ukranian People, as they were both betrayed, invaded and slaughtered by the Soviets and the Nazis

16 # I can lie. See # 10 (I said: I don’t think so).

    "

    Helena"

"Andrea's photo reflect some of the "Bravos Navegadores" in his portoghese genetic (as them before he takes us in a journey) -- his sense of adventure, of passion, and the way he shows us the world is amazing and unique. Indeed a born traveller but also a sensitive soul .... Everytime you look at his pictures you feel better. Great photographer and has an unique sense of humour.. I am very happy to have met him tru Flickr. -- what luck!! And Flickr is so much richer."

"More than anyone else I know of FLICKr, Andre brings the world to life. His travel pictures, and of course, his pictures of Lisbon, are rich in detail, color, light and composition. His portraits are compassionate and human, his scenery vibrant, warm and alive. His architecture is brilliantly framed and perfectly detailed, and his seascapes simply make me want to pack my bags and head to the nearest airport!! In fact, no one on FLICKr will cost me more than Andre in the next couple of years, as his stunning photos inspire me to visit missing gems such as New Zealand, Cuba, and Portugal, and to revisit, and maybe really see for the first time, places he has documented so brilliantly, such as Morocco and India."

    Marta"

His world is a rich, colourful land populated by beautiful people and magnificent architechture. His sensibility as a photographer is as wonderful as his sense of humour and warmth as a writer.
    You won't be disappointed..."
