Library & museum of the Admont monastery
Tradition & innovation

The monastery library, which was completed in 1776, is the world’s largest monastic library. Measuring 70 m in length, the library impresses with its fresco paintings an wood carvings.

The new main museum has complemented the monastery library as an additional highlight since 2003. Manuscripts and early prints, art from the Middle Ages to the present, Father Gabriel Strobl’s natural history collection, current MADE FOR ADMONT art (some of which was created specifically for the blind), a multi-media monastery presentation, special exhibitions, a panorama mountain path and much more makes a visit to the museum an incomparable experience.

The library and the museum wing nestle within the generous cloister complex with its garden architecture, herb garden, monastery pond and the monastery cellar. These reveal impressive views of the Gesäuse landscape backdrop and the nearby national park. The new museum was awarded the “Austrian Museum Prize 2005” and welcomes around 60,000 visitors every year.
