John Burk Nature Outdoor Travel Photographs' photostream

I am an outdoor photographer, writer, and historical researcher from the North Quabbin region of Massachusetts, a little-known area with a number of hidden natural treasures. I've explored and hiked natural places throughout all of New England, as well as a number of national parks and preserves such as Yellowstone, Yosemite, Hawaii, the Florida Everglades, the Smokies and the Outer Banks.

I've recently authored The Wildlife of New England: A Viewer's Guide, Massachusetts Covered Bridges: Images of America, AMC's Massachusetts Trail Guide and Best Day Hikes near Boston, the Mount Grace Land Trust's hiking guide, and From the Valley to Wachusett: The Hidden Nature of Central Massachusetts. In press are New England's Natural Wonders: An Explorer's Guide and a expanded book about the Valley region of central Massachusetts.

Though my main interests are nature and wildlife, I also enjoy shooting a variety of other subjects such as lighthouses, covered bridges, town commons, etc.

The New England Guide set serves as a portfolio for a guide to unique natural attractions that I'm working on, ranging from popular areas such as Acadia, Cape Cod, and the White Mountains to lesser-known sites such as an old-growth forest in the Berkshires, the Rhode Island coast, and the northwest hills of Connecticut. The reason many of my pictures begin with two letter codes is so I can sort them in this set.

All of these images were taken on 35mm slide film and scanned. Some of these images lose a bit of sharpness due to the scanning process, and a number were downsized for easy upload and viewing.
