I've been using Flickr for a few years now, so I thought it was about time to step up and write something about myself.

I guess I'll start at the beginning. My first camera was an old 110 film job back in the early 80's that took horrible pictures, but eventually, roadtrip upon roadtrip to Grandma's house left me with quite an extensive series on people and their habits while driving. I'm in my 30's, so in those days reading newspapers and shaving legs were still considered reasonable while behind the wheel. Too bad most of those shots were lost in one of my many moves between Texas and California.

I didn't pick up another camera until six years ago after I had established my life as a mom for two years. Up until then, finding something outside of bottles and ABC's seemed to pose a challenge. I started with a Kodak point and shoot, which took great pictures on the go, but then I started looking at other people's pictures, and wanted to have more control of my images. Focus, playing with saturation and clarity, experimenting with conversions, and well, layering sounded like it could be fun, too. Eventually, I upgraded to a Nikon SLR that I borrowed from a friend. I fell in LOVE with the freedom, which lead to me getting my hot little hands on a Nikon D80, which I've been shooting with for almost 4 years (time for an upgrade!).

Eventually, I started tinkering with film and more film and well, it's addicting, so more and more film. I have a Hasselblad 503cx, which gives me goosebumps every time I shoot with it. I also have a Polaroid SX-70, a Holga, a Polaroid Colorpack II, and I'm currently borrowing a friend's Nikon F, which is a very user friendly 35mm from 1964.

I've done a few gallery shows, hung in coffee houses, and created a book, which were all fabulous and a blast, but now that I've done that, I'm seeking bigger adventures. Just not sure which direction to take that thirst, yet.

Thanks for stopping by my stream and offering comments and showing your love. I really appreciate any and all feedback, as it helps me grow as an artist.

I'm selling some of my art, as well as, my skills here.

Feel free to contact me with any questions and happy shooting!

~ Karen

"Wistful and imaginative is how I'd describe the work of this Persnickety Dame. I'd recommend a glass of wine and a good half an hour (or more) spent browsing and you definitely won't be disappointed. Beautifully crafted work on offer here."

"A friend told me that I use muted colors for my photos frequently. Karen is one of several photographers that has inspired me in that way.

I skim over some Flickr photographers occasionally - not Karen. I scrutinize her photos. :)"

amber {in the shadow of za'ha'dum} says:

"First of all, Karen is one of the most conceptually creative photographers I've ever known. She consistently comes up with ideas that I never would have thought of--or, if I have, she's actually taken the time and effort and has the skill to photograph them and make them come out, which I am always in awe of. She also has the best titles of anyone I know, and I am always inspired to be a better photographer when I look at her stream. To boot, she is also an incredibly kind and FUNNY person--a joy to be around!"

"I think that Karen manages to do with her photography the same as she does with people; bringing out the extraordinary in the ordinary. I love that looking through her stream will open my eyes to the little wonders that I have always had around me, but somehow completely missed out on. Until now. :)"

    Bill in DC says:

"I first came across Karen's photos only a few days ago. I was bowled over. As a San Francisco photographer, Karen is one of many thousands of photographers in the area and one of perhaps a couple of hundred who are very good. But even among the elite, she is a standout. She records subjects seen and photographed thousands of times in an entirely new light, taking in her subjects in ways that are totally fresh. Her attention to focus, composition, color and line demonstrate a technical expertise -- but never let it be said that her accomplishments are merely technical. In the end, it's her use of techniques in creative ways that makes her work so exciting.

Keep up the great work, Karen!"

"I've only recently discovered Karen's work but it has me so gripped and compelled that I felt the need to do something to applaud such a talented woman. Her colours, creativity and angle-licious view of things could only be little drops of her soul leaking onto her photographs. Please, I beg you Karen, keep this up!"
