Frizztext says:
"Ghandi was a preacher of patience, but Rita Banerji is a thinker from India, who discovered that the result is nearly nothing, if your behavior is too passive. So she is fighting with an adorable engagement vs. the abortion of female embryos. Congratulations to her book and her online activities too! But beside her political engagement I like her lyrical documents of Calcutta's daily life: bicycles in the monsoon-rain, white dressed police men with white umbrellas in the Kalkota mud, blind female beggars on the boardwalk, friendly children, not knowing, that there are rich countries on the other side of the ocean. Rita knows. She studied in the USA; maybe a reason why she has the energy to compare the cultural boxes instantly, trying to establish justice everywhere - even in India...

""It is true that Rita's images are wonderful, personal, informative ... real, but there is more to it than her talent with a camera. Rita is one of those rare individuals who are able to bridge the gap between art and service. The term: "Art for art's sake" may sound catchy and cool in lower Manhattan, but in Calcutta her work jumps to the next level. Surely, art is for "service and blessedness - justice and progress" in its most progressive uses and applications. She is like a photographer who would not be satisfied with just taking a picture of the Nazi genocides. She stands up to the demon and draws her sword. The 50 Million Missing will not be silenced or overturned. She shines a light on the killing of Indian females (a 21st century genocide). She is a heroine for her gender and for all of us. India invented the concept of "Dharma". She lives it!"

"Turgenev wrote that, "A picture shows me at a glance what it takes dozens of pages of a book to expound.". Rita's photography speaks volumes. Her images are among the finest I have encountered on flickr.
I hope others will take the time as I have to join her here on a walk through the streets of Calcutta. What she shows us can be beautiful or disturbing but even when turning her camera on the poorest and most neglected she treats her subjects with empathy and allows us to see their strength and dignity. The issues she addresses are universal.
Thank you for sharing your photographs Rita."8th April, 2007
