In early 2009, Michael Jackson was still alive, moonwalking around the place, Brittany Murphy was alive too, doing that strange, unexplainable pout thingy with her lips, Heath Ledger, unfortunately, was dead. Still, it is not for these people that we look to January 2009, but rather for the genesis of One Horse Town.
On a balmy summer’s day, perhaps not unlike this one, provided that the birds are twittering perfect renditions of songs by The Smiths and you have a wonderful feeling in your tummy, like you’ve just eaten a lovely bit of cake, Justin Poulter and Simon Berndt (two fiercely good-looking, yet sensitive, multi-talented young men) came together in what can only be described as a conflagration of sheer awesomeness. They had both specialised in illustration at CPUT and joined forces in order to pool resources, clients and a love for high-quality work.
In the short time they have been together, One Horse Town have won the award for the best stand at Design Indaba Expo 2009 and also been nominated for a Loerie award for work they did with Saatchi & Saatchi for Wordsworth Books, an in-store campaign entitled “Travel with Wordsworth”. In June 2009 (very close to when Michael Jackson did his final moonwalk, in fact) they moved into their new premises at the Woodstock Industrial Centre, where they continue to create veritable visual symphonies to this day.
Early 2010 saw One Horse Town add another member to their gang, the super-suave Shaun Swainland (one wonders how they all fit onto the horse, but they have assured me that it is a rather large one, with the loveliest eyelashes).

Paul White.
