Once upon a time when I was still a child and growing up, I lived on a farm that was isolated yet a small drive to school, neighbors, the corner store. I was in grade 1 and this time will remain the magic moment(s) that formed the core of my creative self. I made stuff out of nothing. Books from empty cardboard cereal boxes using cut out pics. from LOOK or LIFE magazines and using flour and water as glue. String bound the book spine. I made dolls from chunks of wood and hair of cornsilk. I still am saddened that the cornsilk dissolves into a brown mess overnight. Tiny cereal boxes were doll beds. Old torn shirtcuffs with the button closing still attached became doll skirts. Grecian goddess clothing was designed by wrapping torn nylon strips from disgarded slips (they wore slips in the 50s) round and round the doll body. Maybe they were mummies? Well today I may as well live on a farm that is isolated and miles away from Michaels, et. al., because I use newspaper, wire, flour, water, bleach, nails, sandpaper, old flower corsages torn apart, old wedding dresses dismantled and used bit by bit, old prom dresses (the tulle ones are way fab.), bits of old broken jewellery. Stuff that you'd find in the kitchen, porch, barn, workshed, animal pen (I use lots of bird feathers), and attic filled with old trunks of stuff. I do use brand new acrylic paint and love acrylic medium for gluing, with a nod to Aleen's Tacky Glue. But if I didn't have that I'd be using old house paint for the colors. In any event, I make a variety of things and one thing always leads to another...
