I am introduced to many artists and each one has their own special cachet. With regards to the contemporary artist Nicolas Jonval, I could only describe him as existing 'out-of-the-box'. His style is so unique that there is no place for him in the box. Nicolas deserves to be in an environment where his work can glow from above and in his own right he accomplishes great things where there are no boundaries and no restrictions. Nicolas is enthusiastic with his use of colour and the result is outstanding and takes you on a journey beyond realism. This is an artist on a mission. The subject of some of his pieces are dark but because they are bright, they are captivating, almost as if he wishes to toy with your emotions - not mockingly but to test and stretch your imagination beyond your wildest dreams. Once you are embraced you can realise the profound meaning that Nicolas's work portrays. There's an air of deception but certainly not of disappointment.
The surprise is that Nicolas Jonval creates his art by fusing photography with painting... It may be a world of fantasy and of confusion but it is 'a point of view' and to respect comes admiration and then appreciation and an understanding that in life all is not what it may first seem to be... To explore is to discover...
These dynamic paintings have been exhibited all over the South of France, Berlin, Switzerland, Holland and the USA.

C'est vraisemblablement par la rapidité d'exécution que surgit la révélation. Dans un monde d'abstraction où tout se percute, au sein de la matière, au coeur de la couleur, le geste crée la surprise. Par une ligne, un trait, un dégradé, il moule un oeil, un visage. Il nous raconte une histoire.


No doubt from the quickness of his stroke is born revelation. In his abstract world, everything is in collision, born in matter, born in colour, movement creates surprise. Thought a line, a stroke, a shading, an eye unfolds, a face appears. A story is portrayed.




French painter Nicolas Jonval. ‘s work will be on exhibit at Pi gallery, Kansas City, MO, USA starting in January, 2007.

Loosely painted in bright colors, Jonval.’s neo- expressionist style is deserving of a closer look. At once naive and complex, his figurative paintings contain multiple layers of visual expression. The viewer is immediately drawn to the color and composition then on closer inspection one is struck by the narrative aspect of each piece.

Jonval.’s work has been exhibited throughout Southern France, Berlin, Switzerland and and the Netherlands. Pi gallery is proud to show his work for the first time in the USA.

Nicolas Jonval. appeared one day on my computer screen, an e-mail is sent: "clic"... and the shock from the images strikes you right away. An other day he showed up in our small gallery, his arms loaded with paintings, a franc smile and small glasses on his nose, truly happy!
He put his canvases on the floor, a mix of singular art and free figuration of an almost expressionist nature. One has to look carefully to them in order to understand the true meaning taken from daily-life.
"We are fed with images every day, we never think of going beyond them, I do take the opposite side of that attitude, I am trying to hide things in my paintings so that people think about what I might have put in them."
From his paintings the bright colors and the techniques used are rich with material effects.
This painter from Grasse, France, truly belongs to the "peculiar artists" of our gallery and his work will be shown all year long.
Among the "classics" are: Chabaud, Loren, Machado-Rico, Roux, Salvadori, Thomassin... Mister Jonval. is much welcomed in the dream makers kingdom of that crazy world of the 21st century.
