In one photo he will bring you into the heart of the City, a place he never seems to leave. Which city is that? Not very important in fact, as only the atmosphere his eyes catches and transmits to the image counts. The city of human beings before the city of buildings. But what does he want to say through his images? I dont have the exact answer, but sometimes I feel he seems to catch the inhumanity of the city, the desert made of people.   "Zen Zen (a.k.a. 'Uncle Foto') is one of Flickr's most popular figures, as much for his work as for his community role. Running groups and a (very) large contact network, he is an objective, yet generous and encouraging critic who has tremendously improved the photography of many, and helped me in my own search for my photographic ways, strengths and visions.
  
  As an artist he never stops to surprise us, with constant reinvention of styles and technique, subjects and their interpretation. A few permanent interests, though, define him pretty much as a 'brand' and creative character:
  
  The strongest (and most permanent, IMHO) is Urban Life, in all its diversity, with or without humans in the frame (but always present with their artefacts), from a distance or close-up (but always with a perspective, and I don't have the photographic meaning in mind - the interpreting view of a distinct individual with emotions and intellect). In this 'genre' I have likened him to the founding classics like Cartier-Bresson, an analogy strengthened by the street ambience, frequent use of B&W and Leica-like immediacy (although the Leica precision sometimes gives way to a Holga/Lomo -style lo-fi creativity)..
  
  Another resurfacing theme is the 'close inspection' of detail: natural (like flowers) or man-made, seen not only from a close distance, but interpreted (with the help of creative post-processing) as a metaphor, symbolic and verging on the poetic.
  
  Which is how I might define Uncle Foto: a HDR artist :) No - nothing to do with the technique (although he isn't immune to Photomatix). The high dynamic range between the rough and the delicate, strong and vulnerable, mundane and poetic - and everything in between.
  
  Add to this the friendly wisdom of an encouraging Uncle - and you have the portrait of an iconic Flickr figure."
