Life of all kinds, and how we as human beings interact with it, and respond to it, has always interested me. How life is so ephemeral and transitory has made me want to dig further into the psychology of our universe. Through my own representational language, be it obvious or obscure, I wish to engage the psyche. By employing that which may be real or imagined, I am suggesting a believable structure, yet one not necessarily rational.

Tosca Hidalgo y Terán
b. San Francisco, California.
Lived in Taos, & Santa Fe, NM for approximately 13 years (89-01)
before making Toronto her current home.

Tosca has been working with metal and computers for over 25 years.
Introduced to glass blowing and flameworking in the late 80’s she was reacquainted with glass blowing, and flameworking six years ago, and recently to glass casting while working at Urban Glass, Brooklyn.
Her work has been exhibited throughout Canada and the United States.

A featured artist on Culture Canada her installations in Toronto include: Harbourfront Centre, The Design Exchange, *new* gallery, Weewerk, & Digifest 03, 04, & 05.

Tosca’s work has been featured in Art Jewelry Magazine, 500 pendants & lockets, and Etsy’s promotional posters.

For 2009 Tosca has been formally invited by the director of Urban Glass to create a body of work for SOFA New York- The International Exposition of Sculptural Objects & Fine Art, as well Corning Museum’s Fashion Extavaganza taking place in June 09.

“I continue to study and learn new techniques to incorporate into my work and instruction. I don’t believe in ‘keeping secrets’ and I strive to pass along as much information as I can to people that sign up for my metal + glass courses.
I am a strong believer in “..anything is possible..” and that one learns by doing. I feel strongly that the work created by beginning students with little or no previous experience that can be viewed on my website is a testimony of my ability to transfer the knowledge that I have gained. My classes are structured but not hindered by formality or pre-requisite abilities; I provide an environment in which individual creativity is nurtured and small ideas can flourish to great work in an exceptionally short period of time.”

Tosca is currently a resident artist at the Ontario Science Centre.
