Laurel Hill Cemetery was founded in 1836 along the banks of the Schuylkill River as a bucolic alternative to the crowded graveyards of inner-city Philadelphia. A National Historic Landmark, Laurel Hill was the first garden cemetery in the United States and the first cemetery designed by an architect. The final destination of the upper-class elite, military heroes, historical figures, and influencial citizens, Laurel Hill is a rich part of Philadelphia's cultural legacy. Comprised of 78 acres of greenspace bordering the East Falls and Strawberry Mansion neighborhoods, Laurel Hill is also a recreational sculpture garden and arboretum. Laurel Hill is open to the public 7 days a week and has a full roster of scheduled tours and events. Go to our website for more information.
