When you hear some guy say 'I am going to become a legitimate artist - I'm not going to paint trains' - they are disavowing the whole movement as art. They are saying that it is a stepping-stone for them to become real artists. That's crazy. It's naive. They are denying what they came from. They also don't realise what they are a part of. We created an art form that came from the letter. The medium that it belongs on is the subway. There is nothing that can compare to it being on the trains. It's instant history, because you know it's not going to last long. What's so crazy is that these guys deny their history to jump into something that's easier, for the dollars.
