“Light is my inspiration because it creates the image”

Here’s Subir Basak from Kolkata, who does not like himself to be called a photographer; instead I like the phrase “artist of Light and shade” better. Born(1968) to a family of hardcore businessmen , I was hell bent on breaking the mould and building a new means of livelihood for me. The inspiration was provided by the demigods of photography –Cartier Bresson,Steve Mccury and Raghu Rai to name a few.
I started photography at the age of 12,with a Agfa click III camera. I learnt the basics of light and shade through the trial and error method and my ardent reading habit. But the real sharpening of my skills was done while I pursued a comprehensive ‘Advance Photography’ course in Kolkata under a well renowned documentary photographer. Those were the years of my teen age, but as adulthood reigned upon me I got a job of photo-journalist in a Daily newspaper. This job moulded me and my work for the time to come. My real topic of interest became –the favorite of many photographers- “PEOPLE”.
Recognition of my work come true through publication in many books, journals and exhibited in many exhibition in India and abroad .
And both God and my critics have always been fair and kind to me, as some of the works have been recently bought by agencies like National Geographic, Reproductive Rights of USA, Magnetpartnership, ISCKON, Conde Nast Traveller Mag.Arnoldo Mondadori Editore,Italy, Seagull publications,FNB, Long's Creative Sdn Bhd, wcnr World Comm, Wells Fargo,Editora Novo Conceito,Brazil, FRATERNALE & ASSOCIATES ,USA. among the many.

PLZ NOTE:-
Many NGOs and other organizations have been requesting me to use of my photos for their purpose free of charges. Photography is my passion and, being self-employed, I research, travel and make of these photographs at my own expense. In order to continue to support my work I must charge a fee for the use of my photographs.

One more important point to say...Grey faces without the appropriate photos in their stream will be "BLOCKED."

"Subir is one of my favorite photographer. His photographs speak volumes.

His photographs are real depiction of colourful India, its festivity, reality and charm. I am nowhere to comment on his photographic skills, an aesthetic sense and intensity both can be seen in his photographs.

Many known him just as a talented photograph but I would like to mention here that he is so humble, pure and the simplest person.

Wish you all good luck in your artistic field."

    Rikh Mukherjee says:

"Subir Basak (B.B- That's what I call him) is an immensely talented photographer who captures images from his heart. His shots reveal a great attention to the detail, aiming to create a connection between the spectator and the reality of his works. You'll never see an image without a precise purpose, a meaning, an accurate choice of time and space. His work had been exhibited across the world in multiple countries and been published different magazines. Very recently his work been selected & published in "Getty Images " .

I hope "B.B" will turn more proactive in his upcoming days and will explore the world at his fullest."

    ingetje tadros says:

"Subir's work have always interested me, especially the way he makes his compositions, there's a certain approach i really like about it. His main interest are people wich is my greatest interest as well. What i also like about Subir is that he gives good critics and support my works as well. When i was in Kolkata we spoke on the phone several times and due to unforseen circumstances we could not meet, what was a real pity.
I truly think he is a great photographer and i am a big fan of his work and i wish Subir all the best in his career as a 'people' photographer, you have a wonderfull eye which is a gift. The way you portay people always puts a smile on my face.
