"....one should be aware of the problematics that emerge when dealing with the interpretation of self-portraits. Interpreting can be an attempt to try to make “sense” of something or to solve the confusion, irritation or sheer fascination it invokes in us individually when looking at something. But solving or “making sense” does not necessarily have to mean searching for some “truth” or “authenticity” of art. Thus, in the case of self-portraits it is tempting on the first glance to trace an insight into the artist represented in the picture, to some sort of “authenticity.
