I was a self-employed artist with no health insurance in September 2005, when I was diagnosed with stage III rectal cancer. I got by with a lot of help from my friends, and a record-breaking fundraiser that enabled me to have the life-saving surgery I needed. The benefit was organized from my laptop while enduring the effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments to shrink my tumor. The speed and power of the internet and the strength of an online art community (like flickr!) can make miracles happen.
