Q: What is muktibangla?

A: It's a Bengali student organization compromising of only NRBs of Generation X and Generation Y youth, who focuses on educating the poor of Bangladesh. The group was started by an independent film maker Shaun Imtiaz, to do something positive for Bangladesh. Our first phase is to gather settled Bengali youth of USA, UK, Canada, Australia, because we believe NRBs have a lot of power and influence to do positive things for Bangladesh. We hope to expand in more than just in education, but also in business, medical science, environmental science, social science, and in IT.

Q: What are some of the projects this organization is presently doing?

A: For now we're just working on creating a scholarship program for the underprivileged.

Q: Can you give us little bit of scope about Muktibangla?

A: Right now, we're getting the paperworks together with the New York State Secretary Office. I'm currently living in Georgia but most of MuktiBangla officers live in Long Island, NY. Hopefuly we'll expand it to Bangla Town-Brick Lane, East London-UK. MuktiBangla is planning to open a branch there.

We are targetting the poorest of the poor who needs education, basically primary education. By giving primary education we are setting a foundation for them to build upon the education the received.

When it comes to education I strongly believe the poor should be educated in English to catch up with the rest of the changing world. Knowledge is power and by giving the poor education we give them power.

We may take Zakat money, the charity money, and added to it also, because if we just use charity money to feed than the money is used in a day or two, after that they can't use it anymore. However, if we take that charity money and apply it to the poor's education than we give them something they can use for their entire life.

Right now I'm not as active as the other officers since I have to get my medical degree, but I help here and there in their promotions.

The first thing Shaun is doing is bringing awareness through the media. He talked with ATN Bangla officials in NYC but they give pathetic offers in taking control of our project. So we took the media in our own hands since ATN Bangla is too much affiliated with political parties and we want to keep politics out of this. Shawn already bought all the equipment but we need the license from the state of NY.

For the time being we're looking for an agent in Bangladesh who we can trust with the money we send.

Our safe instruments would be businesses established in Bangladesh, but that's not till we're fully settled with our careers. The whole point of establishing these businesses would be for the poor's education.

As for a large corporation, there are corruption in all levels, and, as a strong Muslim I would not want Zakat money to be in the hands of these evil people. I would rather see someone we trust and know, to have the money used for the poor.
