Help / FAQ / Your Profile

Do I have to create a profile?

No, not if you don't want to. You might have noticed that the only information we require from you is your email address. Other than that, nothing is mandatory.

If you do flesh out your profile a little, you'll increase the chance of finding other people who share your interests, if that's what you're into.

By the way, you can find people on Flick here, and search by email, real name, screen name or by interests.

What is that pixelated grey and black smiley face in a box?

This is called a buddy icon. You can change this icon by going here, and choose an image from your computer, the web or your photostream to use.

Then you can use the buddy icon builder tool to select a square from the image you've chosen which will become your buddy icon. Much nicer than that silly grey square with the black eyes!

Please note, only content considered "safe" is appropriate for your buddy icon. If we find that you've uploaded a buddy icon that contains "moderate" or "restricted" content, we'll remove the buddy icon, moderate your account as “restricted” and send you a warning. If we find you doing it again, we’ll terminate your account.

Can I change my screen name?

Yes. You can change your screen name as much as you like*. This might be a bit confusing for friends or family who use Flickr too, but go for it!

*Note: when you change your screen name, the old one becomes available for another member to use.

Someone's written a testimonial about me. What if I don't want to publish it?

That's totally up to you. When someone writes a testimonial about you, there will be a little flag on your home page that takes you to a page where you can either publish or delete this new testimonial.

You can go back to this page any time, to see a summary of any testimonials you've written for people (both published, and waiting for approval), as well as any testimonials other people have written about you.

Can I point my friends towards a page that's mine in Flickr?

Yes! You can make your very own Flickr web address. You just need to choose an alias which will represent your Flickr page. Once you've set your alias, this cannot be changed, so think carefully!

Then you will have two addresses which you can share with your friends, that will look a bit like these:

For your photos page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/george/
For your profile: http://www.flickr.com/people/george/

Will I be notified if one of my contacts writes me a testimonial?

If one of your contacts writes you a testimonial, you will receive a notification in your recent activity and can approve the testimonial. Email notifications for pending testimonials are still under construction, but they *will return soon*.

You can also check to see if you have any testimonials awaiting your approval by visiting this page.

What happened to the interests section in my profile?

We no longer display that in your profile, but if you want to access what you had written previously you can visit this page to retrieve it.
