When will this end? This is plaguing the site for much more than a week now.

-------------

STAFF Update: As per Kevin's note, the FlOps (Flickr Ops) team are on it and we should begin to see some relief shortly.

Also: Some more explanation provided by Dan can be read here.

Latest update here, 11:30 AM, PST.

Nerboo: The February 19th, 2009 stats isn't causing the hiccups, also known as database load spike messages. I just got hit twice with hiccups when editing a post in a topic in one of my groups, but was able to press F5 to get rid of the hiccups, even though I was asked if I wish to resend the information because the hiccups message showed up when I clicked on the Post Now button in a group topic.

Edit - Now more often, but just when trying accessing of groups. Not affecting photostreams of me and my contacts, and also not affecting the Flickr homepage.

Hopefully some official statement gets made by someone higher up in the Flick hierarchy as to what happened and what they are going to do to make it now happen again. It's really great the ops staff is posting here and I appreciate it, but really someone in management needs to speak about what is going on for two weeks.

Also forgot to mention that the hiccups don't happen when accessing sets of photos (and videos for Pro members) of mine and of my contacts. Just groups are being affected. And again, unlike most members, most times the hiccups don't happen on my end.

Anytime there is a database load spike, Flickr has to put up the message saying the site has the hiccups and that they are looking into the problems.

Wow. That's some big words. But they would be wrong. Kakul (she) who picked up the reins over a year and a half ago when Stewart first went on paternity is an active user.

I appreciate that people are frustrated, but do we really need to bash away at the team in so personal a manner?

I completely agree that this shouldn't get personal - and (at least) my comment was not intended as a personal blow - however you might understand that these hiccups (I'd rather would them be called by what they are instead of this euphemism - how about f***ups) are coming and going for quite a long time now.
I would think it should have been possible in that time to get to the bottom of that problem and fix them once and for all...
Of course I understand that this is an ever growing site that *I* wouldn't even attempt to maintain. However people are paying for its services and there are other big sites that don't regularly suffer from such problems...

Just my two cents

I use a great many sites on the net regularly unfortunately seems to be the ones with the worse level and functioning. I am not technical but would someone from the staff just explain what the problem is and what they intend to do to rectify it

I don't know that fuckup is actually a useful term in this instance. It's not like someone pulled the cord out of the wall and voila, hiccups.

It typically happens when the (and i'm not an ops person), there's too much lag in replicating information across the vast data array or the slaves (an odd term) are way out of sync with their masters (?), again, I'm not an ops person... I don't know in this instance what the actual issue is, but it's not like someone's pushed a shiny button that they shouldn't have.

Rev Dan Catt says:

Hi Gang,

As Chrisser said above "...hiccups, also known as database load spike messages" which in very general terms means when you see a hiccup message the database has utterly refused to deal with a request.

Now remember, I'm just a front end guy, so any technical explanation I give will make the ops people point and laugh at me. But I do know that the hiccup page sadly can't give a more detailed message about what's actually wrong.

The database system is built for redundancy and fail-over, so if a few boxes die the others pick up the slack, but that in combination with something else ... such as a switch has becoming flooded ... or our offline tasks system is trying to push too many tasks out, or the President publishes new photos of their puppy ... and so on ...

The ops guys are online with a couple of backend guys and I can see they are busy working away. From what I can tell ...

Murphy is checking that all the machines and hardware is happy and bringing up anything that may need it. Myles has turned off the offline tasks (or at least throttled it) to take some load off (or rather, give more db cycles to serving pages rather than updating stuff right away).

John is switching off some of the other tasks that take place on the site, again to give the page serving higher priority.

When everything is under control and understood, those tasks will get switched back on and catch-up, the the offline tasks will probably be ramped back up.

And yeah, this is better than the "Massages" we used to have when the whole site was off. The Hiccups generally effect just one bit of the site, with the rest carrying on as normal. But in this case there seems to be some knock on effect happening.

Oh and Morning.

Heather - people at Kakul's level are no longer private figures but are public executives. My comment was squarely aimed at making sure Kakul is eating her own dog food, as is the term in the tech world. How can an executive have ANY idea what the users of their service are experiencing if the executive also doesn't use the service. Right now Flickr is operating like a startup, not a service operated by one of the largest and oldest internet companies on the planet.

Im glad to see Kakul is a Flickr user. There were media reports when she took over that she was NOT an active Flickr user, along with several other Yahoo! executives. I would really like to see *HER* in here giving updates when things get really bad, but I'm nostalgic for debating Stewart I guess.

The people who have the real technical answers are all busy trying to fix it, and it's positively something more specific that "database spikes".

And by "fix it" I mean, turn off all the non-essential services, locate the specific problem, then fix it. Will try to keep you updated :)

Thank you for your explanation which I'm not clever enough to truly understand, and I do appreciate the sheer size of the site and all the work done by the sysop, & staff, I really do & I love this place.

However, I can't help wonder would the issue be as relevant if videos didn't exist in flickr photo sharing?

I mean come on now, 20MB per photo, 150MB per video.
150 MB for a video limited to 90 seconds in length??
In the year & couple of months I've been here the hiccups have been rampant since the silly things have come on scene.

Just a thought posed as a question.

Pretty sure it's not, the file sizes just effect, well, the filers, it doesn't have an effect on the database or overall activity on the site. If we ran out of space, then yeah, maybe ... but the amount of photos is still way more than videos.

Perhaps, if the videos made the site so popular that all the extra people coming here to add comments and tags was causing trouble ;)

Sorry to say videos aren't at fault here in this instance.

Since nonone else has taken this slant I will:

It seems fairly well known that the parent company "Yahooinc" is having more than its share of money problems of late. Of most interest to us Flickr users is their cash flow and downsizing. Both of which may equate to not having the hardware (servers/bandwidth) or peopleware (programmers, admin, exc.) to: prevent the problems from happening in the 1st place, fix the problems and lastly, ensure that it does not happen again.

Hey there folks!

So, we've done some analysis of what caused the major hiccups this morning (again, it's still morning here :), and found that there was an extraordinary number of queries going to generate group information from profile pages. We're not sure yet why, but it could be that an increasing number of members joined just the right number of large groups on Flickr that caused those queries to run off the rail and take us down the path to Hiccupsville, Population: Us. We're also suspecting this may have be causing the random ones that have been happening occasionally out of nowhere for a couple minutes, and then vanish.

Currently, group information is disabled on profiles. It's possible and likely we won't have this enabled until Monday, while the developers dissect the information we have to make it better to withstand extra load. You will still be able to see your own groups from the groups page.

Thanks sirgawins, here is one in return. :D

Thanks for the updates, Rev. Dan, Kevin and Zack. I rarely see the hiccups message when most others are seeing the message, and when I do get that message, it is mostly when trying to access groups, and the hiccups make it very difficult if it is groups I am an admin for including the 40 groups I started (yes, you've read correctly, I started 40 groups)

Time to go make that garlic bread I guess - thanks for the shove in the right direction....

I'm having garlic bread with spaghetti tomorrow. Tonight, it is pizza made from a mix. :-D

Despite some who wish to hide their groups, I use them as a means to see their interests and if they conflict with mine. I choose NOT to be a contact (and thus establish a chain to me) with SOME folks who add me as a contact.

Flickr does not have any mechanism "approve" others making you a contact.

I'm as least as fussy about who links to me as those who wish to hide their groups. If hidden groups become a "feature" I'll block anybody who added me as a contact but chooses to hide their groups. The block is extreme but the only way I can break the chain to me.

I agree with natural_form. I glance through a person's groups to see what they are interested in to help me decide if we have enough in common to be contacts.

I don't know why anyone would want to keep their groups private except to hide their interests which in itself alerts me to unfavorable photos therefore an unfavorable contact.
