[Official Topic] Contact Management Improvements

Flickr Staff

Kevin says:

Hey everyone- we're rolling out a change to make contact management better for you. Gone is the mostly static layout of your contact list, so now you can search and sort through your contacts! You can also see our blog post about the change.

If you mosey on over to this page here you'll see how it works.

If you have any problems, let us know!

Is there a reason why on the Contacts List, you show the last date of upload but not the contact's location, and on the "Who Calls You a Contact" page, you show their location but not the last date of upload?

Dunstan says:

zyrcster - there is. We have limited horizontal space, so we're limited by the number of columns we can show. We felt that "last update" was more useful than "location" when managing people who are already your contacts, and "location" was more useful than "last update" when looking at the people who follow you.

Ideally we'd have both columns, but there's not really room.

The Searcher says:

Dunstan: totally serious. I get behind on reciprocating contacts, and before I know it, there's a 1000+ of them I have to go through one at a time, click-window-click-click-close, rinse-repeat. I keep getting more behind because there's no way to batch-select contacts and add them all at once (not all 1000, but just like in the Organizr, I can select a bunch of photos, or open a set, and perform certain batch operations all at once.)

It's rather daunting when I have to do them one at a time.

Nice work Flickr, this is a big improvement. A missing feature I'd like to see is a list of all my contacts who do not call me one of their own, which would be helpful for anyone who's approaching the limit of 3,000 non-reciprocal contacts. Also it would be helpful in general to know that there's a few people who I might have added years ago who did not add me, and have not published photos in a number of months... why keep them as a contact?

The Searcher - we left batch operations out because, for the majority of people, it would have added rarely used clutter/confusion. (The UI would have had to change a fair bit to accommodate that stuff.)

In terms of a big "Just add all these people who list me as a contact" button -- there are some technical limitations behind leaving that out, and I don't see those limitations going away any time soon. Sorry about that.

That was in the original build, but in beta testing threw up all kinds of "I CANNOT believe you don't have me marked as a FRIEND!!" drama. It was quite amazing.

After a while we all agreed it was a feature that did more harm than good, so it got the chop.

(As a minimum we try to have new features on Flickr not cause actual crying and yelling. I think that's an acceptable baseline to work from.)

Excellent work. One minor issue (more a wish) though: is it possible that after you've clicked on 'contacts' and 'contacts list' you can lock the dropbox on for example 'your friends' or 'your family' so that that's what you always instantly see as soon after you've clicked on 'contact list'.

To put it in better wording: sort order should be sticky. Would be very much appreciated...

I love this idea, and it's only a step away from what I really wanted...

If you could put this kind of thing in the organizer then you could do a massive remove or mark people as contact/ family/friend. Or maybe if you could sort it by what other people mark you as...

I would love to remove all the one way contacts that I have. I'd prefer it if most of my contacts were mutual.

I like this. I like it a lot. The sorting is particularly nifty. Much <3

Some things:

- Pagination isn't consistent between /contacts/ and /contacts/rev/ - my /contacts/ is 21 entries and is all on one page; my /contacts/rev/ is 22 entries, split across two pages at the 15th entry.

- There is no option to set the number of items per page. There should be. And it should be sticky.

- Like others have said, sort order should be sticky.

rrrrolf: "http://flickr.com/help/forum/en-us/87088/569984/"

That would be most useful, you're right, but unfortunately the query that generates the "how many photos in this member's photostream can rrrrolf actually view"-number, becomes way too expensive when run against more than one account.

To give you an example, I think each photo has 28 variations on whether you can see it or not (combinations of privacy, safety level, content type, etc). For us to calculate that permission for each photo in each photostream for each person that appears in that list (and keep it all up to date in real-time) is just too much.

Hence the "public photos" count instead.

This is how Flickr photo-counts have always worked, the only difference is that it's now more noticeable. Sorry about that.

(It bums me out too, btw.)

Ross says:

brokengod - Pagination looks inconsistent because of the fact that we don't always show 15 contacts per page. If the number of contacts on the next page is 6 or fewer, we try to save you a click by putting them on the current page instead.

We actually do this for all pagination around the site, though with different numbers.

I do like the new contacts management page very much -- great improvement! Any possibility of getting a column that shows when the last time a contact commented on one of my photos? I would like to be able to periodically clean out contacts who are no longer commenting at all on my images. I don't expect contacts to comment on everything I upload, but by the same token I would like to eliminate contacts who haven't commented on ANY of my uploads in the last say, several months. The new page actually lets me easily remove contacts who haven't been active on Flickr for a long time when I sort the list by "last upload" -- would love to be able to do the same for "last comment". Thanks.

brokengod says:

Ross - good answer.

I had suspected that might be the case. I'm not entirely convinced it's a good idea, but it's also not a bad one - a question of taste rather than right/wrong.

It's not even a concern for >trivial numbers of items anyway. It was only my general dislike for people and resultant short contact list that showed it up.

Complaint regarding inability to change number of items per page still stands. :)

This is a huge improvement and I love it. Thank you.

There seems to be a bit of a bug going on in the reciprocal relationships department. I'm sorry if this has already been reported, but a quick glance through the thread indicates that it hasn't.

Steps to duplicate:
1) Go to the "Who calls you a contact" page.
2) Click the "You list them as" column heading to sort the list so that all of the "Nothing yet" Flickr members are together.
3) In looking at that list, I noticed several people (at least 10) who *are* marked as my contact, friend, or family. When I click that person's name, I see their correct status. But they are listed in the group of people whom I have not marked as a contact.

I can give you specific contact names privately, if that's helpful.

Paul Hammond says:

C. E. Beavers and Francesco Gallarotti: Thanks for the feedback. Adding more types of contact is a common request, and is surprisingly hard for us to do. Dunstan hints at the problem further up this page:

To give you an example, I think each photo has 28 variations on whether you can see it or not (combinations of privacy, safety level, content type, etc). For us to calculate that permission for each photo in each photostream for each person that appears in that list (and keep it all up to date in real-time) is just too much.

We have this kind of problem all over the site - when we calculate the number of pages for the pagination thing at the bottom of a photostream page, when we decide whether to show a set on the sets page, when we do photo searches within your contacts etc. And if we allow combinations of groups it gets harder still.

I'm not saying this will never happen, just that it'll be quite a lot of work if we do it - both for the engineers and our long suffering servers.

In the meantime, you don't have to use "family" to mean "people that are related to me" - some people use this to mean "people i work with" or "my best friends" instead...
Posted 54 months ago. ( permalink )

zyrcster says:

myjuditz If you click the link at the top of You list them as... , it sorts them in either ascending or descending order, starting (or ending) with Contacts and ending (or starting) with Friend & Family.

See the little arrow next to it when you click it? Click it again and watch the arrow change and the column re-sort.

It does exactly what you want it to do.

Further, the drop-down menu at the very top of the page lets you choose whether to show Everyone, Just Contacts, Just Friends, Just Family, or Just Friends and Family.

In short, it's now much more flexible than it was before and it does show you what you want to see.

Wonderful! Thanks!

I read everything so far.

I would prefer to be able to arbitrarily group my contacts per parts of the world or time zones since that helps in concentrating on making comments to those who are actually awake at the time, especially during their free time so we can sometimes interact. Meanwhile, to solve the problems, I have folders per time zones in my personal Firefox bar where I group links to my contacts.

The location column which is only with the "who counts you as a contact" is more helpful in the contacts I have than the people who count me as a contact.

By the way, concerning various types of contacts, I have been saying for over 3 years that I wish we had more types of contacts but not as we have now. These terms, family, friends and contacts are not ideal and mean nothing.since we do not all have family and real-life friends in Flickr. I have also been telling people that to me, it is a matter of levels of accessibility. So, level 1; level 2; level 3; level 4; level 5; level 6. I think at least 5-6 levels would be helpful. I understand now how it could be technically difficult. Still, think of it as levels of accessibility. These are the terms that should be used. Actually, the word level or any other suitable term can be used, just not family, friends since that is not always realistic.

Thank you again!

Looking good!

I'd like to add a comment about the lack of location field across all levels. I was hoping the functionality of "search" had also improved to allow me to search the content it was displaying at me. But it is still the old contact search it seems. :-(

Main point example: I'm traveling. I want to send a note to my contacts in London telling them i'll be there soon and we should meet up! The obvious approach, 'Search for "London"', is not it.

The non-intuitive current method of going to the view, that currently includes non-mutual contacts too, that has a location field and sorting... then paging/scrolling to find London mentions.... is a bit, well, yuck.

I realize old contacts interface never had this functionality either, but now it's so close you are just teasing us! ;-) But otherwise drastic improvements abound!

Thank you for the long explanation.
I work on a large global website and I totally understand what the technical difficulties can be.
The real question I have is: are these technical difficulties due to a legacy architecture that didn't scale well? If yes, are there long term plan to rewrite the architecture in a slimmer and more scalable way? At the rate of growth of Flickr I feel that soon the existing system will just start crumbling down... I know you guys are working hard on maintaining and improving the system, I am just curious about your long term plans if you can sketch them briefly.
Thanks again for all your hard work :-)

Excellent rearrangement scheme. I'm going to have some fun with this. Did you know that Barack Obama has the most photos of all my contacts. Must be all those heads of state he's been trying to recruit for his Uber-Cabinet.

I'm still waiting for you to fix the scratch-n-sniff feature. It has never worked for me.

BTW. Where are my CHICKENS? You still haven't found them yet Flickr!

Are you still there flickr?....huh? Don't leave mad? I just want you to find my Chickens for me. I haven't seen them in 2 years now. What did you do with them? Did you leave them out in your last upgrade?

I'm not whining too much for you am I?

When I first saw this on the Flickr blog I got excited, but then I realized it's just a way to sort existing contacts using existing groups/permissions. I want the ability to create new groups and assign permissions for those groups. Not everyone is a "family" or "friend". Some people are "clients". C'mon Flickr, make this a useful tool for professionals!

Thanks for rolling out this improvement. I was really looking forward to seeing a feature that would allow me to effectively rename my contacts. The reason: often contacts will change their username, and it therefore becomes quite difficult to figure out who they really are.

Levels? Sheesh! I'm going to Defcon One now. Too Darn confusing! How could I possibly understand what those distinctions mean?

It would be just as good to label my contacts Green contacts, Blue Contacts, Yellow Contacts, Purple Contacts and Rainbow Contacts.

Or better yet. Animal, Mineral or Vegetable.

There's a distinction between Family, Friends and just plain vanilla contact. Family is what it is, Family. Friends are people you also allow to see private photos and Plain Vanilla is just that and they can see only your public photos. I for one have had not much use for the restrictions on photo access but the friends/family distinction helps me more in defining who is more attentive to my work thus putting them in the former category and of course who I consider family for the latter category.

this is cool. and useful. a batch operation to add those who call me a contact would be great, and also a batch to remove contacts. I filtered by those who had now zero images and found there were dozens who have either effectively left flickr or have gone private. An option to either 'un-contact' them or even block them all at once in some cases would be great.

Excellent work. Thanks for this flickr.

I seem to have a similar issue to Minette Layne, but I have just one instance of a "one way contact" being listed as such when in fact they are mutual.

I have 1300 contacts but only 900 are those who call me as a contact , so why I waste my time to those 400 , there should be a separating list , so that either I request them to add me or otherwise remove them . so I think for people who know computer is would be an easy task so why don,t you add this feature. ??

It all looks very nice to me and can understand the why didn't they list me thing...but

A bit dissapointed user defined catagogies are not include...the same ol friends, family, contacts...some kind of hot list would be nice, those who comment you a lot and you want to reciprocate to, but in order to do that "last commented on you" would be required as well as some overall commented history, including totals you commented on them.....which i think is a good idea as the offshoot would be more accurate comment reciprocation ( rather than memory) and would alleviate people getting fogotton or shortchanged.

Very welcome improvements. I'd still like to be able to make more different groups (folders would be ok), even if the people in those groups have to be assigned individual friends & family rights.

Minor little buggie -- new accounts with no pictures: Last Upload reads "Ages ago".
