I still think that, when I ask for recent activity over the last 7 days (or 24 hours), I should actually get all the activity over that period, and I only get the last few comments, tags, etc.

Can that be fixed, please? Please?

Thanks.

Trolls are everywhere ... here as well.

I see a couple of very clear and well-formulated feature requests, so I think it's a no-brainer for Flickr where to put their developer time next.

This just plain sucks!

The one piece of info that I really need is impossible to get - namely: new comments on my latest and not so late pictures.

Why take something that worked fine and mess with it ???

You've added a fifth wheel and taken away the steering wheel!

GO BACK do NOT collect $200 or my next $24 for that matter!

I've been using the new home page since was out for testing. I got used to it pretty quickly, and find that it's OK. It's a bit different, and it's not perfect. But it's OK.

I just thought it was worth mentioning this to show that not everyone thinks the world's coming to an end because of the change. (Well, maybe it is, but it's not because of a few tweaks to a web page.)

I don't care about the home page, but anyone who thinks that the new activity page provides a simpler or more usable way of presenting the information is deluded. And if it's not better, what's the point?

Do flickr staff honestly believe that the new activity page is easier to use? Providing a simple 1-click switch would be trivial and greatly improve the usability. (and make it a decent sized button so you can use it on an iPhone!)

That also implies there should be different URLS so it will work on browsers without javascript enabled and be bookmarkable.

There are some good things about it - like the mute button, but surely that would work equally well on a "comments you've made" page?

Hopefully someone might write a greasemonkey script?

In Repsonse to Vincents Images

You can "tweak" it a little by clicking

This is your new Recent Activity on Flickr. You can modify what shows up here by (tweaking your activity settings.) Then find the one that says Default View (activity settings) and unclick (comments you've made)

THEN you need to use www.flickr.com/photos_comments.gne

to see comments you have made on others pics.

THEN GO AND HAVE A NICE LAY DOWN, you'll need it after all that work

It's already difficult enough to have the time to keep updated on contacts' photos, make comments, see new photos, etc.

Now, with the changes you've made, I got nearly 7,000 photos I have already seen so I can look at comments made by other people?

Do you seriously believe that this is what people want? I sure don't.

The way you've offered to delete these other remarks has to be done each and every time. From other reactions, there doesn't seem to be anyone who has time to kill this way. I for one am so occupied with my responsibilities as a good "Flickr friend" , I hardly take any photos anymore.

Also I find that my photos are being used without my permission by professionals, so I am beginning to wonder if it's worthwhile to continue after my subscription runs out.

Thanks for offering this opportunity to react.

I don't completely hate the new homepage but mixing the comments in the activity section is not that handy. As others have stated before me, it's more convenient to have a single link for comments you've made and comments on your pictures than the new system where you have to customize your view all the time.
Additionally, I liked the view of the front page with the pictures on the right side more.

Heather,

Have you considered the fact that maybe the reason why you did not see a lot of people change back during the test phase was that it was hard to do so?

Basing decisions off of flawed statistics is bad. Very bad.

I strongly disagree with your likening this to the Flickr Video launch. I do not shoot video and can just ignore it. Whereas this, I have no option to opt out of.

I rather have 2 flavors of ice cream that I like than 13 flavors of ice cream that I absolutely hate.

During the test phase, I opted to just turn view comments off which means I am no longer tracking conversations on pictures because it was simply too much hassle. I think this has greatly diminished my Flickr experience. What do you think?

I also find it concerning that the Uploadr has seemingly been ignored for an extended time. It is important to have something usable and stable and that is not the case. I still have to use the older version to be able to successfully upload.

This is sadly not progress.

Why can't you develop something like the My Yahoo home page, then I can choose what I want and not what YOU think I want?

Plus I would prefer an option to choose between the new and classic look, not just to have a take it or leave it option.

A mobile version of flickr would be a nice option.

What I miss the most are:

- Comments on your photos
- Comments you've made

It was way clearer and easier to use when these features were separated. I'm totally lost with the new "recent activity", my pictures and those of others are all mixed up... I know I can customize my Activity settings and ask not to view Comments I've made, but the thing is that I DO want to see other people reactions on pictures I've left a comment on! But just, not at the same time! Replying to comments on my photos is more urgent, so I want to see them easily in one click, and then keep an eye on comments I've left....

Hope Flickr will fix this soon!

About the rest of the new features, I think they are great! I like the 10 thumbnails of my contacts photos instead of 5. And the new feature "Your groups" with thumbnails of pictures posted in my groups is a great idea too.

But really, please, resuscitate our beloved "Comments on your photos" & "Comments you've made"!

Hello, I am Bruce  Pro User  says:

Maybe more dynamic content is a good idea (although I don't see the point).

But the new page makes poor use of space.

I have to scroll down to see the "Everyone's photos" area, or the links to Activity, You, Explore, Help. These used to be accessible without scrolling the homepage window. And there is a big unused white space down the right hand side.

It's worse than the new Facebook homepage, and that's saying something.

@lollipop@

not hard to do that:

1. go to "Recent Activity".
2. under "Activity Settings", uncheck "Comments You've Made".
3. click "Save".
your saved settings will propagate to your Home page, so you'll only see comments on your photos there.

if you also want to have a way to see "Comments You've Made", go back to "Recent Activity" and check "Comments You've Made" WITHOUT SAVING.
now your "Home" should show only comments on your pics, and "Recent Activity" will show everything.
have fun. ;-)

Re the new flickr homepage ... I've been running a prelease of it when first offered the chance and worked out how to make it both quite-like and arguably better-than the old one. However the formal release is missing the "Comments you've made" link from every page instead of it just being a piece of clutter removable from your homepage.I found that unchecking the home page configuration option to have your-comments present within activity then made it fairly sane with a few more of everything like your uploads contacts' photos etc.

If you are missing the "Comments you've made" link down-below, bookmark this:

Quoting Archidave because this is so true for me too: "actually my stance is that i leave A LOT of comments on OTHER peoples pictures, and whilst i enjoy receiving comments on my own It is the sheer volume of traffic in a single stream that becomes unmanageable, and with no quick and simple way of toggling between then."

The recent activity feature is the worst change of this whole fiasco. The testers must not have been frequent users, or must not have taken into account people with several contacts. I'm part of a doll community and I am pretty much a flickr addict. I check here everyday for new interesting photos from my contacts. It is way too hard now to navigate through comments I left, vs comments left on my stream!

As a paying user, this is totally unfair.

Rarely have I seen a UI update that is this confusing. You went from simplicity to bunching everything together in a scrolling page that is configurable much like Windows UI. Yet you don't have the hundreds of functions they need to organize. Combing the comments for other and your own photos really doesn't make much sense from a UI standpoint. I like to see both separated.

Still hating the new home page. If you only do one thing to fix it please let it be putting the recent comments on your photos and comments you've made back the way it was. IT SUCKS how it is now. What I find even more disturbing is that from what I've read a large amount of people who tested out the sneak peak for you disliked that feature and yet you still did it anyway. Why'd you even bother with a sneak peak if you were just going to do what the heck you wanted anyway? I'm seriously considering letting my pro account go when it is up in a few months. At least with the stupid video thing you can opt to not put up videos or look at them. This you stuck us all with.

I'm so sad to find that I can no longer just simply check activity on my own images and then comments I've left on others, separately with ease.
It worries me that people will be less inclined to leave other people comments now because they can't easily keep track of them.

Wow! what can I say. I dislike the new home page VERY much. It does a terrible job of showing recent comments and stuff. It is completely unorganized. The initial look is hardly very different from before....but the interaction is horrible. This is no way an improvement...and I MUCH prefer the way it was before. I really wish there was a way to keep my stream the way it was. I just paid you 25.00 for another year, and I am getting less and less effectiveness with your site with each supposed u8pgrade you make.

The changes are most definitely for the worse. The activity is next to impossible to see. Please just put it back to the way it was. There was no need to change it.

Maybe it is time for Yahoo to have a change of management for their Flickr website.....................are you watching Heather?

How about a response to this hyper-critical (of your decision) thread?

Thats alot of the problem though, what was once one-click operations now require several clicks
But only once if you include the save button.

Having said that, while just this once I understand where flickr is coming-from, I have to agree that achieveing backwards-compatibility is far from intuitive. The more you make available the less cluttered you have to make things, and if design criteria were the only consideration I agree the default version of the result and the availability of how-tos is pretty rubbish.

What irks me rather more is that no sooner had I posted the URL than that page which was working fine last night has started to be selective in what it reviews. An early GUESS is that it looks like it will continue to report on anything you first commented-on before today, but nothing since. THAT would be a bug, unless the feature is knowingly withdrawn. At which point backwards-compatibility is lost. Now that would suck big-time.

I have to agree that this "New & Improved" homepage is not IMPROVED at all.. its more convoluted and confusing then ever before.

When I paid for a pro account I PAID for what we were USING THEN!!!!! I liked it that way, I liked it soo much I PAID to have a pro account! So why change what WE The people PAID FOR????

I want it back. and if it doesnt go back the way it was I sure as SHIT wont be BUYING an account next year!

Please Flickr staff Admit that this ISNT what the people wanted and put it BACK the way it was! Loyal Flickr Enthusiast (Up until now) ~Pamela

To me this is like when Coca Cola changed its formula to the New Coke. They realized they screwed up a good thing and brought the old back. Hopefully flickr will realized how dunderheaded their new look is...bring back the old.

This is stupid. I have spent ages going all over the place and still can't get to see the latest activity on my photos. Everything worked before so why change it. What idiot had nothing better to do than to decide he'd fool around with something that worked well.

And as for that stupid podcast - I can't get any volume out of it and all my settings are correct.

CHANGE IT ALL BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS AND SACK THE IDIOT THAT HAS CAUSED ME A LOT OF PROBLEMS!!!!

Ok, I must admit that I was very tired when I got home last night... and when I stopped by Flickr I was FLOORED by the change to my familiar home page. I have gotten it somewhat back to normal by adjusting preferences, and will continue to explore. There are some things I like, and some things that are less convenient.

I see different things at different times when I open the page, and see no use for explore Creative Commons.... but maybe that is just me.

I am a diehard Flickr user, post images to my artsy blog every day, and will hang in here with you... but I do hope that you all will listen to the very real concerns of the users here who want to see changes made to a site that we make work through our uploads.

I must say that I was surprised (in a bad way) when I logged on to Flickr this morning. The new home page is quite dreadful and "user-unfriendly". The one thing I could do to make it a little better was go into my Activity Settings and tweak them so as not to go into someone else's photostream when I clicked on Recent Activity. I only wish we could have the option to use the old Home page...

i really don't like it now, with the old flickr homepage you could get where you want really easily and it looked well nice whereas now the recent activity is all muddled up with comments you've made and basicly i hate it, get the old one backkk! :(

Once upon a time, I loved Flickr's clever and so intuitive settings - it was
simple , easy, elegant.
WHY we need that busy and stupid changes - Explore, Contacts, YOU ( recte your stream ) Organize - appears both on the top of the page, also on the bottom. "Recent activity on my photos " and " On your comments "
is now horrible - very small size photos on the LEFT, the number of views, faves and comments is edited also so small you need glasses to see them - while that idiotic settings box stays on the RIGHT .
What is the purpose for these "new" implementations?
Who was asking for them ?
Why we had no banner announcing that BEFORE implementing - we don't come everyday in Forum to check what they prepare for us.

On Yahoo you have the option to go back to the old version - on Flickr, we NEVER had an option, everything was and is done by force, in total disregard for the users - and users are those who pay and make this site what it is - what it was, sorry -
Staff should only maintain the site - the owner is the one who decides if any change is necessary for make things easier and accessible for user - in this case, 90% - customers.

No problem, we can keep our friends here without any payed account
if we give up uploading for Flickr.
They count on your ego and addiction - but seems that all of you forget that uploading photos is not only for you, it makes Flickr running , being famous (....) and having profits.

They don't need your opinion.
They need your photos.

This is horrendous. Why do you change things once people have paid for things. One feature I liked at flickr was tracking comments. This is next to impossible now. I make comments on alot of photos, and now it is all mixed in with comments on mine. It is horrible!! You really should have left it alone, it was perfect the way it was....now it is a completely useless feature. Many of the nice features that were once a part of flickr are now so different. Please put my stuff back to where it was when I paid for it...that is what I paid for....not this confusion. So sad that you are systematically ruining your site. Just leave it the way it was.

"Clearly none of you use gmail, which merges the inbox and the sent items in your archive."

I use it plenty, thanks. The archive is not the everyday UI, as the name suggests. I'll reiterate: Google mail, like every other mail client, keeps the Sent Mail and the Inbox separate at the front end.

Sorry to comment again but I've not talked to anyone who likes this. Not a single person. Could we at least have the option of going back to the old design? You were able to run both during beta testing, why not still?

Honestly, this makes me not want to log in or upload images. Awful awful awful.

Heather,

I am on board with the majority of people here in regards to the separation of comments I've made vs. comments on my photos. In short, I prefer the old method.

Can you comment on why flickr thinks the new page has enhanced the user experience? After 17 pages of comments flickr staff must have a reasonable feel for how the majority of users who wish to voice their opinion are reacting to the new environment.

I am specifically interested in why flickr thinks that the merging of comments I've made and comments on my photos is a good idea.

I do think it is somewhat disingenuous to largely dismiss negative feedback (one of your earlier posts in this stream) as being a result of resistance to change. I am referring to this quote (cut and paste):

Heather wrote:
"People who are ok or like change are far less likely to share their feedback so what we see here shouldn't be seen as all that representative of the bigger picture."
--end of quote.

This quote is somewhat patronizing. Further, what about people who are NOT resistant change but dislike the new interface? Would they not post here in the feedback section? Its a poor assumption that people who voice negative opinions all fall into one category.

If this was a really good move for flickr there would be a more balanced response to the new environment. Both good and bad rather than overwhelmingly negative.
