If you're experiencing weirdness with your new Home Page, this the place to share what's going on.

It's helpful if you can be as clear as possible. There are many moving parts on the new home page and we might ask you for a screen shot to better enable the team to figure out what's gone awry.

This topic is specifically for reporting bugs. We do want to hear your feedback, but please do so over in the feedback thread.

We're going to delete feedback in this topic as it will become impossible to see the bugs.
It's nothing personal.

is there any way to switch back to the classic layout?

No. It was only possible to switch back during the sneak preview period.

Unchecking 'comments I've made' doesn't seem to refresh my recent activity screen. (I have it set to 'since my last login'). The little flickr dots move around for a bit, but the comments I've made aren't hidden. (tried in both IE and Firefox)

OK, I'll repeat a bug that I believe was mentioned before but was obviously never fixed. On the "Recent Activities" page many of the groups' graphics are no longer visible making it very difficult if you are challenging in groups to keep track of whether you've won or not.

zyrcster  Pro User  says:

To be specific about what mamie007 said, there are some graphic awards where the .jpg does not display in the Recent Activity, while there are others that do display.

Now, while this may be a boon for everyone who doesn't want to see the graphics in the recent activity, it's not that great for those that do want to see them. At least help us understand why some graphics are not displaying while other are displaying, or tell us what the intended behavior is supposed to be.

When I try to click on "recent activity" to read new comments on my stream (which is the only apparent way to do it now) I see comments on other people's photos - and they're not even my contacts!

BUG REPORT (not just whining ;-)):

At least, I assume it's a bug.

If you set the homepage top section to display recent uploads instead of recent activity, then click on "recent activity" to open in a new tab or window, it just opens a duplicate of the same homepage, with the recent uploads showing.

Shouldn't it either open a second copy of the homepage, now showing recent activity in the top section or - preferably - open the recent activity page itself?

(And while we're at it, if not, can a link to that be added up there, instead of having to scroll to the top or bottom to access it through the header or footer?)

Here is an example of a photo page that does not display correctly in my recent activity:
flickr.com/photos/segamatic/2945580861/

The graphic in my comment from my group (Photo Face-Off Challenges) does not render as a graphic (no matter who in our group posts it) in recent activity while the graphic from another group (Challenge You) does render in recent activity. None of the members of our group report seeing our graphic as a graphic in their recent activity. The graphic is a JPG, same as the other graphic posted from the CY group.

The Organise thing is on the right, beneath the Blog thing.

So the answers really are that I can minimise but not get rid of it, and the other I can't get rid of. In other words, I as a flickr member don't have a choice. If I want to get rid of things, I have to do it myself - I have to mute each photo individually, I have to minimise and I have to shut up and accept the rubbish I'm given - is that accurate so far?

The thing under the blog is a rotating set of links to tips on various features available on the site.

And the ability to mute in "Comments you've made" wasn't there before -- you *always* got everything you'd commented on if you went to that page. Now you can mute some. You can also change your defaults to not see them all the time, period.

And I think there's a Feedback thread precisely because you don't have to shut up.

I've already expressed my dislike of the new Recent Activity elsewhere. Now I am reporting this annoyance:

Whenever one has the Recent Activity page up and clicks the Refresh button, you get the "contains postdata...blah, blah, blah" popup screen, necessitating another click on OK before the page refreshes. Since I keep a Recent Activity tag open all the time to go back to periodically during the day, this extra click each time will be a royal pain in the butt. I sure hope you guys can fix this.

is it just that I only notice now, but did you change the colour of flickrs background with the introduction of the new home page too?

it used to be white, now it has a blue hue over it.
I can see white around buttons and certain aspects on the pages.

people who have rounded angles or shadow around their pictures used to have those pictures blend in, now it shows a white frame..

I have a well calibrated screen, and I realize not everybody has that, but it's really bugging me..
here is a screenshot where I pulled the highlights down a bit to show it more clearly:

and to be honest: I'd rather you'd remove the hue than to "fix" the buttons.

The recent activity doesn't work properly for me in Firefox.

Changing the check boxes isn't updating the activity accordingly on the LH side. The Save button doesn't work. Whenever I go away and navigate back to the Recent Activity page it just remembers my last selection in the check boxes regardless of whether I've saved or not.

Please can we have the old stuff until you've got this sorted AND added a 1 click option for comments made on other photos??!!

alright, so I used the digital color meter on my mac which decided that it IS off-white.

the colour is FEFEFE, and knowing this made it easier to search for it, so:

if you open the flickr css style file:

the first line reads:
body { padding: 0; margin: 0px; text-align: center; background-color: #fefefe; color: #000; }
there is the culprit..

p0p*eRic: That is the correct color, by Flickr design. Our screens here at FlickrHQ don't show the kind of colors your screenshot has, however, and I'm not sure what might be causing it. #fefefe is "almost" white, when your screenshot is showing something much more dark in color.

Do you have some sort of user-defined CSS file or a different system/window background color specified in your OS, by chance?

I have my "recent activity" settings set to show EVERYTHING.

And yet, if I have three recent things happen (two comments I've made, plus, say a fave on one of my photos) in order, A, B & C, my home page "recent activity" often only shows A & C, and I don't see B until I follow the "more recent activity" link. It is VERY frustrating.

I miss comments, faves, because everything on my front page is something I've seen so I assume that anything in "more recent activity" will be even older, but that is not the case.

I don't have a specific example, next time I will take screenshots for you but it has been happening for quite some time, and I've heard the same complaint from other people.

That's because the settings are linked to a cookie in your browser. You'll have to make those changes at each computer you normally use for Flickr.

.schill says:

picsbymac: This behaviour may not be explained in the FAQs yet, so I'll try to fill in the gaps.

When you are changing the activity settings on /activity/ we save them in a cookie on your computer - so those settings will be remembered on each computer you use, separately. We also do this so we can remember your choices when you're paginating through results on the recent activity page itself.

When you click "save" on the recent activity page, those settings should then be committed and will then show up on your home page. When you click the "save" button, that should result in your settings being remembered. Is that the case, or are you seeing different behaviour?

ColleenM  Pro User  says:

Just so I'm clear.

Saving the changes only saves them for that single computer. If you fix everything at your work computer, you'll also have to fix them again on your home computer.

Is that correct?
Posted 9 months ago. ( permalink )

.schill says:

ColleenM: Whatever activity settings you "save", change what is shown on your home page and are persistent there. Once you click "save", your changes are committed and will show on your home page across different computers (or, different browsers on the same computer.)

The "state" of your recent activity settings page (ie., the state of the checkboxes) are based on cookies, and so they are not saved across different computers (or browsers.) If you delete your cookies or use a different browser or a different computer, the recent activity settings will show the default state.

Thanks Colleen & .schill

The cookie explanation applies to what I'm seeing tonight at home on a different computer. It's unfortunate that the changes to checkboxes has to be made on every computer people use. Can I suggest that the FAQ highlight this, to help mitigate more of the same question?

I have been using the new layout for over a week and I have a nagging feeling that the settings on my work computer (that I had changed + saved) were wiped out when this change was rolled out globally since I had to change my activity preferences again this afternoon. I'll check the work computer tomorrow and see if the changes held since I'd cleared my cache before I logged off. If there's a problem I'll let you know.

ColleenM  Pro User  says:

I was wrong, picsbymac.

Once they are saved, they're saved on Flickr. So they'll be there no matter which computer you use.

If you make changes and don't save them (like to toggle back and forth between comments you've made and comments people have left for you) those temporary settings won't show up if you move to a different computer.

And yes, I expect things might have gotten wiped when the rollout happened.

Paul Hammond says:

-cr: when you say

"refreshing "Recent activity" doesn't seem to update "views" counts?"

do you mean the little view counts under the photo titles (eg: "71 views | 3 comments | 0 favorites")?

You're right, they're a little delayed in comparison to the view counts on the photo page itself.

This is one of the tradeoffs we had to make to get the activity page to load quickly. There are so many photos on that page, and taking a little bit longer to make sure we have a completely up to date count on each individual photo would make everything take much longer.

We're looking into whether we can make this better, thanks for pointing it out!

I don't know the answers to people's questions about when sections of the page are shown or hidden, but I'm sure Scott or one of the other developers who worked on the project will respond soon (although it is 8pm here so it may take a while).

Also: quick reminder, this thread is for bug reports only. If you have comments about the new homepage, or want to tell us you don't like it, we'd love to hear about it in the feedback topic. We're deleting feedback posts in this topic as it makes it almost impossible for us to see the bugs reports if we don't

The person who reported that is a free account, who doesn't have access to Stats. I thought during beta a bug fix was rolled out so that free accounts could hide that link permanently.

I encountered a bug when switching between activities from 'comments you've made' that had multiple pages back to 'activities on your items'.

Using the timeframe 'in the last day' i had a page of comments. I unclicked the options under 'activities on your items' and clicked 'comments you've made' . I reviewed several pages and when I changed the the options back to 'activities on your items' there were none. I went back to 'activities on your items' and returned to page 1 then returned to my activities and was able to see them again. It appears it's retaining the page number from the previous search.

ColleenM: Yep, I see that on one of my test accounts. I'll add it to the bug queue and we'll get to it as soon as we can. Thanks for raising it (and thanks to geometricjewels for pointing it out in the first place)

Just went to see whether the same would happen on the homepage, but when revealing the Recent Activity there, the most recent entry is from two hours ago. It appears to be excluding all the comments I posted since then (two on my photos, two on someone else's). These are shown in the separate Recent Activity page.

This is a real bug reports and not a gripe.

To reproduce...
1) Comment on someones Photo Set.
2) Try to Mute Activity on the set. It appears to work.
3) Go back and reload your recent items.
4) Note that the Mute Activity did not work on the set. It always returns.

I had to go in and delete all my comments on peoples sets to get them to disappear from my Recent Activity list. A shame. The comments were valid.

I reported last night that the 'save settings' button doesn't work for me on the latest release of firefox.

I'm on the same PC. I save my activity settings. I then change a couple of check boxes (basically I want my default activity to be comments / faves I received and then I change the check boxes to look at comments I've made). Regardless of what I save when I go away and come back the the activity page it remembers my last set of check boxes. NOT what I'd saved as the default activity.

Additionally changing the checkboxes doesn't update the display on the RH side anyway.

Is this a bug?

Ok, so the missing comments I mentioned earlier did show up eventually.

The embedded video looks funky also on the homepage's Recent Activity section.

Ok people it seems the unticking of the show my comments box seems to work and i am getting only my comments. But how can see the ones that have been made previously? I think with this recent activity change we have more disadvantages then advantages. Is there a way of getting our old home page back.

It just makes life a lot harder when things change and it isn't all tried and tested. There is so many people here on flickr that i think we should have the choice. At least as long as the new face has been completely tried and tested.

So please give us the old one back.

When I untick the option for seeing my comments on others andclick on save it just saves for that session. But when I re enter my account I have to uncheck the seeing my comments etc again and save again.

Can something be done about it? Is it a bug or what?

On a temporary basis...

If you are missing the "Comments you've made" link down-below, bookmark this:
www.flickr.com/photos_comments.gne

However that seems to touch on another possible bug - currently it looks like it will continue to report on anything you first commented-on before today, but nothing since.

(so ironically if you can't save your filtered settings that isn't a "bug" it's a "workaround" HeHe)

edit - looks like that might just have been a database glitch - it's at-least partly ok again now 20 mins later.

There is a problem when looking at historical activity:

On the Recent Activity page, I have all the Activity Setting checkboxes checked, apart from the muted items one. If I then set the Timeframe to "since the beginning", I get 169 pages of results. I click on page 169 and see things from 45 months ago - so far, so good.

If I now click on page 168, I get the following message:

You don't have any activity yet, but if someone leaves you a comment or marks one of your photos as a favorite, we'll let you know about it here!

The same happens on pages 165, 166 and 167, but on page 164 I see two items. Page 163 seems normal, but page 162 again shows the no activity message...

I realize I posted this already, but now I'm a bit confused. Am I supposed to have to refresh www.flickr.com/activity/ after I check/uncheck an option in the Activity Settings box? Currently just changing the checked state does not refresh what I see on the left side of the page, but it sounds like it does for some people. Might there be a browser setting I need to change?

Bug 1: Can I at least receive an acknowledgment on it?

Some graphics are not displayed in recent activity. Specifically, any group icon from Photo Face-Off Challenges, but there are other groups as well. here is an example of this:

graphic is not shown in recent activity

Here is the photo page so that you can see what should be there (scroll to last comments):
www.flickr.com/photos/zyrc/2731870459/

This appears this way for all members of our group that receive this graphic in their comments -- no one can see them in recent activity, whereas other graphics do display, so it's something about our graphic and not local to me.

(an aside, whatever you're doing to prevent this graphic from displaying may be of use an an option for those who do not want to see the graphic. You'll not that no html is even displayed, and it certainly exists in the comment! However, for now, I just want this graphic to display).

Bug 2: In trying to find an example for you, I ended up toggling back and forth a lot on the recent activity page between timeframes, activity on my items and activity on other's items. What I found was that the view did not stick if I left the page to click through to a photo and then returned. I do have cookies enabled.

So, say I chose "last 7 days" as timeframe. If I then click a photo and ten click back, the view reverted to "in the last day". Same with "activity on your items" -- toggle it on, click through a photo, click back, it's reverted to "activity on others." One time, it stuck but said there was no activity in the time frame selected. I refreshed the page and lo, there was activity in that timeframe.

Thanks.

zyrcster Re: Images in comments on recent activity from groups: I'm not familiar with how the HTML from comments is parsed, but it seems like something is dropping certain elements, images included. I will file a bug with the resident expert on said topic. :)

Re: Bug 2, if you're using the back button to navigate around, your browser is probably restoring the state last set in the HTML when the page loaded. We track the checkbox state using a cookie, and to make this work I would have to have the javascript on that page read the cookie and force the checkboxes to be set to whatever the cookie has stored. I have to look at whether this will break any other cases, but otherwise I think it makes sense to implement.

zyrcster: You don't have to, we seem to get those pretty regularly as-is around here - but thanks for the thought. ;)

SavaTheAggie: To re-state, you are using Internet Explorer 6 and are reporting seeing really long load times on the new home page and recent activity. This browser is old and showing its age these days, but there might be something I can change to help improve the load time.

Do you have an older computer, a virus scanner installed by chance, or anything otherwise particular about your set-up? Are other sites slow for you like this, or is this the first real bad lock-up-type thing you're seeing? Does the page just take a while to load, is it useable eg. you can scroll the page while it's loading, or does the browser completely "freeze" up until everything loads and then settles down?

Pardon the "20 questions" moment, this is the engineering "process of elimination" part of my job - there are many things which might be contributing to your issue, so I'm trying to narrow down the possibilities.

Finally, for other people reading this thread, do we have any other IE 6 users who are seeing lock-ups and/or noticeable hanging in their browser when loading the new home page or recent activity pages?

gwennie2006: The two numbers got out of sync, they should be better now.

It's worth noting the number on the stats page only updates once a day so they won't match exactly most of the time...

Bug Report:

ratsj  Pro User  says:

Perhaps this is a "feature" but in the hopes that it is a "bug" that will be fixed, or that I've merely overlooked something, I'll ask here.

I switched to the new homepage during the trial period because I preferred it somewhat and because I was certain there was no going back, eventually. However, it seemed that under some circumstances, which I don't know that I could describe exactly, there were differences in the contents of the "You" menu--in particular, sometimes I could find "Comments You've Made" paired with "Recent Activity" whereas sometimes the choice "Comments You've Made" would be absent. Somehow I acclimated to this and it was not problem--until now.

I have not yet found "Comments You've Made" in any menu, under any circumstance. (Firefox 3, MacBook Pro, cache cleared.) Is this the intended behavior? If it is, is there any way now to see pages and pages of items (things/bits/stuff) on which I have commented with no other kind of "recent activity," short of having to mess with my Activity settings? I mean, I don't want to see "things I've commented on" in my Recenty Activity list (so I have un-checked that box) and I guess I could toggle ALL the checkboxes to get a list of ONLY the commented-upon bits/things/etc. but that will mean I'm spending way too much time Tweaking My Activity Settings.

Have I overlooked an easier way to get the list I want (I hope so), or is this (lack of "Comments You've Made" menu choice) the intended behavior (I hope not), or is it in fact a bug?

thanks!
